Read this on my phone on a layover and just sat with it. My uncle died in a care home too, far from everyone who used to know him, and that line about Trías de Bes's last residence got me more than anything else in the piece. 81 years old. Didn't know his politics, never been to Barcelona, but I know what that kind of ending looks like from the inside.

Josep María Trías de Bes i Serra was a Spanish lawyer and politician whose career traced the shifting alliances of Catalan and Spanish politics after Franco. Born in Madrid on 19 November 1944 into a Barcelona family of jurists and public men, he studied at the Liceo Francés in Barcelona and took a law degree at the University of Barcelona in 1968, specialising in commercial and civil law. His grandfather, Josep Maria Trias de Bes i Giró, had been an international-law professor and a Lliga Regionalista deputy.
As a student in the 1960s he briefly gravitated toward the underground PSUC and took part in the Caputxinada of 1966. By the mid-1970s he had moved into the emerging Catalanist centre. He worked in communications for Convergència Socialista de Catalunya, then helped found Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC). From 1976 he sat on CDC's executive committee and national council, placing him among the party's early organisers around Jordi Pujol.
He entered the Congress of Deputies for Barcelona in September 1980, replacing Joan Rigol, and was re-elected for CiU in 1982, 1986 and 1989. In the chamber he served as fourth secretary from 1982 to 1989 and as fourth vice-president from 1989 to 1993. He pressed for CiU to play a fuller role in Spanish government, a line that put him at odds with Pujol. He declined to stand again in 1993, left CDC in 1995 after criticising the party's closeness to the PSOE and its linguistic policy, and joined the Partido Popular. In 1996 he headed the PP list in Barcelona and returned briefly to Congress before resigning that July to become executive chairman of Trasmediterránea under the Aznar government, a post he held until late 1999 amid a disputed change of management.
He later served on the RTVE board, supported the 2006 Catalan statute campaign, and in 2009 joined Unión, Progreso y Democracia. Away from politics he practised as a commercial lawyer in Barcelona. His wife, labour lawyer Consuelo Maqueda de Anta, was murdered in her office in 1984. Trías de Bes died in Barcelona on 10 September 2026, aged 81. A farewell ceremony was held at the Sant Gervasi funeral home.

In their own words
“He argued that CiU should not settle for governing only an "ínsula barataria".”
Paraphrase of his criticism of limited Catalanist ambition, recalled in La Vanguardia after his death
