Kadir İnanır was a Turkish film actor and director whose tough, principled screen presence made him one of the defining leading men of Yeşilçam, the popular cinema that shaped Turkish popular culture from the late 1960s through the 1980s. Born on 15 April 1949 in Fatsa, Ordu province, he died…

Kadir İnanır was a Turkish film actor and director whose tough, principled screen presence made him one of the defining leading men of Yeşilçam, the popular cinema that shaped Turkish popular culture from the late 1960s through the 1980s. Born on 15 April 1949 in Fatsa, Ordu province, he died on 26 June 2026 in Istanbul at the age of 77.

İnanır entered films in 1968 and built a career playing men who fought injustice, a persona that resonated widely with audiences. His most celebrated partnership was with actress Türkan Şoray. Together they appeared in films including Kara Gözlüm, Unutulan Kadın, Dönüş, Gazi Kadın: Nene Hatun, Deprem, Dila Hanım, and Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım. Their on-screen chemistry became one of the most discussed pairings in Turkish film history and kept public interest in their collaboration alive for decades.

Beyond starring roles he also directed, including the 1991 film Ah Gardaşım and the 1992 television production Savcı, in which he also appeared. In 2013, during a visit to Kosovo, he met Culture Minister Memli Krasniqi to discuss closer cultural and film ties between Kosovo and Turkey and said he would work personally to support that cooperation. Across several decades he remained one of the most recognisable faces of classic Turkish popular cinema.

İnanır had serious health problems in his later years, including a 2024 hospitalisation after a blood clot in the brain. In May 2026 he was admitted to Acıbadem Fulya Hospital in Istanbul for respiratory distress and pneumonia linked to advanced lung cancer and was later moved to intensive care. Hospital chief physician Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Görgen announced that he died at 18:05 on 26 June 2026 from multiple organ failure. Two days later he was buried at Ulus Cemetery in Istanbul after funeral prayers at Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa Mosque, with tributes from cultural and political leaders including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy.

For many viewers İnanır embodied an era of melodrama, social struggle, and clearly drawn heroes. His death closed a chapter on one of the last major leading men of classic Yeşilçam, and tributes stressed both the scale of his body of work and the affection audiences still held for him.

My mum rang to tell me, she'd had Turkish films on in the background my whole childhood and his name always came up. Never knew who he was until she said it today.
