Followed the Sambo case out of curiosity since it was all over the news a few years back, this lawyer was the one who kept pushing it into the open. Someone close to him said it plain: he'd been on dialysis for years before this. Didn't know the guy, but you don't forget a case like that.

Kamaruddin Hendra Simanjuntak was an Indonesian lawyer who became one of the country's best known advocates after he represented the family of Brigadier Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat, known as Brigadir J, in the 2022 killing that implicated senior police general Ferdy Sambo. He died in Jakarta on 19 October 2026, aged 52.
Born on 21 May 1974 in Siborongborong, North Tapanuli, North Sumatra, to Midian Simanjuntak and Nurmaya br. Pardede, he finished high school at SMA Negeri 1 Siborongborong in 1992 and then moved to Jakarta with little money. For a time he slept under a bridge in Klender, East Jakarta, and took casual work as a customer service clerk and salesman before entering the Faculty of Law at Universitas Kristen Indonesia in 2000. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor of laws in 2004 and later completed a master's in law.
From 2007 he practised as a member of the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi). In 2019 he founded Victoria Law Firm. His caseload included high profile corruption matters such as the Hambalang athletes village scandal and the electronic identity card (e-KTP) case, and in 2021 he acted for YouTuber Muhammad Kece in a blasphemy prosecution. In 2020 he also founded a small political party, Partai Demokrasi Republik Indonesia Sejahtera. The appointment that defined his public reputation came in 2022, when Yosua's father, Samuel Hutabarat, engaged him as counsel for the family. Kamaruddin pressed in court and in the media for a full inquiry into Yosua's death inside Sambo's official residence in Duren Tiga, South Jakarta, at a time when the first official account of events was under challenge. The case became one of the most closely watched criminal trials in recent Indonesian history; Sambo was convicted and, after appeal, received a life sentence.
His combative style won him a large following and also brought conflict. In 2023 police named him a suspect in a defamation and false information case arising from remarks he made while representing another client, a designation he disputed as political. Separate hoax reports of his own death circulated in March 2026 and were denied by family and friends.
Kamaruddin had undergone regular kidney dialysis for several years. He died in the early hours of Monday 19 October 2026 at Pelni Hospital in Petamburan, West Jakarta; colleagues placed the time at about 2.47am to 3.00am WIB. His body was taken to the Ukrida funeral home, with burial arrangements still being settled by the family. Fellow lawyers including Martin Lukas Simanjuntak and Poltak Silitonga confirmed the news, and tributes came from the Brigadir J family circle and from across Indonesia's legal community.
