Most Venerable Kappetiyagoda Sirivimala Thera (also reported as Keppetiyagoda Siriwimala Nayaka Thera and Kappitiyagoda Sirivimala Thera; Sinhala: කැප්පෙටියාගොඩ සිරිවිමල හිමි) was a senior Sri Lankan Buddhist monk who served as Anunayaka, or Deputy Chief Prelate, of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya and as Chief Incumbent (Viharadhipathi) of the historic Getambe Rajopavanaramaya on the banks of the Mahaweli River at Peradeniya, near Kandy. He died on 18 October 2026 at the age of 95.
The Ramanna Nikaya is one of the three main monastic fraternities of Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhism, alongside the Siyam and Amarapura Nikayas. Within it, Sirivimala Thera rose to one of its highest offices, and for decades his temple at Getambe served as a centre of religious life for the Kandy area. Sri Lankan media described him as a monk who rendered immense service to the Buddhist revival and the cultural development of the country, and who was held in high esteem for fearlessly raising his voice for the nation and the religion at moments of national and religious significance.
Few details of his early life have been made public. His date and place of birth, his lay name and his family background were not reported in the coverage of his death. Reports that he died in his 96th year place his birth in 1930 or 1931.
Getambe Rajopavanaramaya is known for its ancient sacred Bodhi tree, which tradition and press reports say survived the great Mahaweli flood of August 1947 while nearby structures were swept away, a story that made the temple a popular place for Bodhi puja and blessings. According to a 2013 Sunday Observer feature, Sirivimala Thera became Chief Incumbent after the death of his predecessor in May 1985 and developed the temple from then on. Newswire reported that he led the temple for more than four decades.
From Getambe he became one of the most visited monks in the Kandy region for politicians of every party. Presidents, prime ministers, ministers, governors and presidential candidates called on him for blessings and advice, and his remarks during those visits were regularly reported by national newspapers and television. In August 2019, when Gotabaya Rajapaksa visited the temple as a presidential candidate with his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Thera told him, "This is the last chance. If you miss this chance, the country, all of us, will be over." A Sunday Times photograph of the candidate kneeling before him for a blessing was widely published. Earlier, in February 2019, he told Central Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne that President Maithripala Sirisena had to take responsibility for the chaotic situation in the country.
After Gotabaya Rajapaksa left Sri Lanka during the 2022 economic crisis and protests, Sirivimala Thera wrote to President Ranil Wickremesinghe on 1 August 2022, asking him to personally invite the former president back and to give him the security and privileges due to a former head of state. The letter, reported by The Morning and Ceylon Today, described Rajapaksa as a war hero and argued that the protest movement had been exploited by conspirators. The same week Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena visited him at Getambe.
He was also an outspoken advocate on public issues affecting temples and the wider public. In September 2022 he warned that the temple's centuries old Bodhi tree, its cetiya and several buildings had cracked and were in danger of collapsing into the Mahaweli River after heavy rain, because a protective wall project of about Rs. 210 million begun in 2021 had stalled for lack of funds. That same month the monks of the Central Province Sangha Sabha of the Ramanna Nikaya, meeting under his leadership at Getambe, resolved to switch off the lights of all their temples on Vap Poya day in protest against steep electricity tariff increases.
In 2022 he was elevated to the office of Anunayaka of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya. On 18 December 2022 a ceremony at Getambe, presided over by the Mahanayaka of the Ramanna Nikaya, Makulewe Sri Wimalabhidhana Thera, formally presented his letter of appointment, handed over by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, while former President Mahinda Rajapaksa presented the ceremonial fan. The Nikaya also conferred on him an honorific title. Senior prelates of the Amarapura Nikaya and of the Malwatu and Asgiri chapters, along with the Speaker and several ministers, attended.
On the same day he told visiting MP G.L. Peiris that politicians, like doctors, engineers and other public servants, should voluntarily retire at 60 and make room for young people, a theme he returned to in March 2024 when he warned that Parliament would soon resemble an elders' home.
In his final period he was unwell for some time and was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kandy, where he died on the morning of Sunday 18 October 2026, according to Ada Derana. Hiru News, Ada Derana, the Daily Mirror, Newsfirst, Newswire and The Morning carried the news within hours. The funeral committee said the date and venue of the cremation would be announced later. A specific cause of death was not made public.
