Kenichirō Katsura (桂 憲一郎) was a Japanese animator, character designer and animation director whose drawings shaped the look of television anime, original video animation and games for nearly four decades. Born on December 4, 1966, in Fukushima Prefecture, he is best remembered as the animation character designer of Macross 7, the 1994 series that reworked Haruhiko Mikimoto's original character concepts into the expressive, musical cast that fans of the Macross franchise still love. In later years he became one of the most dependable chief animation directors in the industry, leading the drawing on Knight's & Magic, the Grisaia series, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and Synduality: Noir.

Katsura entered the industry in the mid 1980s as an in-between animator, with early credits that included Fist of the North Star 2. By the end of the decade he was working as a key animator on popular series such as the 1989 Ranma ½ television run, Madō King Granzort and Oishinbo, and on original video animation including Tenchi Muyo! and Bastard!!. He spent many years attached to the studio Gabou Miyabi, and by the early 1990s he was serving as an animation director on Ashita e Free Kick and All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.

Macross 7 made his name. As animation character designer and animation director on the series, and as character designer on the 1995 film Macross 7 the Movie: The Galaxy's Calling Me!, he gave the singer Mylene Flare Jenius and the rest of the Fire Bomber cast their on-screen look. His Macross 7 designs were used again in the 2012 film Macross FB7: Ore no Uta o Kike!. Through the late 1990s and 2000s he was a sought-after designer for game-based projects. He designed characters for the Viper series of PC games, often under the alias Edage Katsura (桂 枝毛), which he used for adult titles, and he became a core artist on Aquaplus adaptations, designing characters for Comic Party Revolution and the ToHeart2 OVA series. In 2009 he directed the Utawarerumono OVA, also serving as its character designer.

From 2012 he returned to television as a lead designer, creating the characters for NAKAIMO: My Little Sister Is Among Them! and Walkure Romanze, before serving as chief animation director on The Fruit of Grisaia and The Eden of Grisaia. He designed the characters and led the drawing on the 2017 mecha fantasy Knight's & Magic, and was chief animation director on How to Keep a Mummy and the first season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. He designed the characters for the Zenonzard web anime and for Synduality: Noir, the 2023 to 2024 series from the Bandai Namco Synduality project, where he was also chief animation director across both seasons. His later work included chief animation direction on the second season of Shy, key animation on Blue Lock, animation direction on Sword of the Demon Hunter, and, in 2026, animation direction on Gintama: The Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames and key animation on the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime film Tears of the Azure Sea.

Colleagues and fans admired his ability to combine a strong sense of volume with warm, appealing character faces, and his skill extended to mecha, effects and animals. He was married to the animator Satoko Miyachi.

Katsura died on September 30, 2026, at the age of 59, while he was undergoing medical treatment for an illness. The specific illness has not been made public. His wife announced his death on October 5, 2026, in a written statement shared on her X account, signed as the representative of the bereaved family. She said the funeral had already been held privately with only close relatives, and she thanked the fans who loved his work and the studios and staff who had worked with him. She asked those who had loved his drawings to quietly say to themselves which character, which illustration or which animation of his they liked, saying she believed it would reach him and make him happy, and to watch his work again when they had time.

The same day the production committees of Knight's & Magic and SYNDUALITY Noir posted formal condolences, thanking him for his great contributions to their series, and Japanese and international outlets including ORICON NEWS, Sponichi, ENCOUNT and Anime News Network reported his death.

In their own words

“If you could quietly say in your heart "I love this character," "I love this illustration" or "I love this animation," I am sure it would reach him and make him happy. And if you have time, nothing would make me happier than for you to watch his work again.”

Satoko Miyachi, his wife, in the family statement posted on X on October 5, 2026 (translated from Japanese)

“To the fans who loved the works and designs my husband was involved in, and to the production companies, staff and everyone who worked with him, I offer my deepest, deepest thanks.”
