I read this on my phone during a matatu ride into town and could not stop thinking about it. A man who gave two whole careers to one community, police work, then teaching and coaching, then back to the uniform near fifty, and he was killed on his way to help at another scene entirely. 55 years old. We argue so much here about what public servants are owed, and then you read something like this, a man who stopped practice to pray with his team when they had a bad day. I never knew him, I am all the way in Nairobi reading a story about Florida, but that line about him, if you knew Kevin you loved him, it just sits with you. Sorry, rambling. Rest well.

Kevin Morris was a Florida law enforcement officer, teacher and football coach who served as a homicide agent with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. He was killed in the line of duty on the night of October 10, 2026, at the age of 55, when a wrong-way driver struck his agency vehicle head-on on Interstate 95 near Titusville while he was on his way to the scene of a deputy-involved shooting in Mims.
Morris first served with the Palm Bay Police Department from 2001 to 2012. A colleague from those years, Yvonne Martinez, recalled that he began as a traffic officer and later joined the canine unit, where he worked with his police dog, Harley. After leaving Palm Bay he taught and coached football at Sebastian River High School, and he was a longtime youth football coach on the Space Coast.
He returned to policing on February 2, 2021, when he was hired as a deputy by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Wayne Ivey said Morris went on to serve as a field training officer and a polygraph examiner before becoming an agent in criminal investigations and a homicide agent. Over his career he received numerous letters of commendation, commendable service awards and a Life Saving Award.
Away from work he was known to many as "Coach Kevin" and "Pastor Kevin." Friends described a man of strong faith who prayed with his teams after hard days and stood by families through injuries and loss. He lived in Titusville and was survived by his wife and children, including a daughter and a son, Joel.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 26-year-old woman returning to Kissimmee from a wedding made a U-turn on I-95 north of the State Road 46 interchange and drove south in the northbound lanes. Her car collided head-on with Morris's vehicle shortly after 11 p.m., both vehicles caught fire, and both drivers died at the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol opened an investigation. At a news conference the next morning Ivey said, "If you knew Kevin, you loved him," and called him "probably one of the nicest people you'll ever meet in your life." The Sheriff's Office said funeral arrangements would be announced when finalized.
