Krzysztof Dowgiałło was a Polish architect, writer and politician whose life linked the Gdańsk opposition, Solidarity and the Contract Sejm. Born on 30 June 1938 in Nowomalin in the Volhynia region (today Novomalyn, Ukraine), he graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Gdańsk University of Technology in 1962. From 1963 he worked as an architect in Great Britain, France and Algeria, and from 1967 he practised in Gdańsk.

He is best known as the author of the poem Ballada o Janku Wiśniewskim (The Ballad of Janek Wiśniewski), written after he took part in the December 1970 protests on the Polish coast. The ballad became one of the lasting symbols of those events and of remembrance for their victims. Dziennik Bałtycki later defended his authorship when it was questioned in public debate.

In 1980 he co-founded Solidarity and sat on the board of the union's Gdańsk region. For opposition work he was imprisoned in 1981 to 1983 and again in 1985. In Potulice Prison he edited the prison newspaper, distributed church aid, taught French to fellow inmates and led protests. After the 1989 breakthrough he served as a deputy in the Contract Sejm for the Citizens' Committee (1989 to 1991), representing the Gdynia area, and as deputy chairman of the Sejm committee on spatial, construction and housing policy. From 1989 to 1993 he also held a vice-presidential post at the International Labour Organization. Between 1990 and 2005 he belonged in turn to the Civic Movement Democratic Action, the Democratic Union and the Freedom Union. He was elected a Sopot city councillor in 1990, 1994 and 1998, and stood unsuccessfully for the Sejm again in 1991, 1993, 1997 and 2001.

He married Anna née Chodkiewicz (died 2023). They had three sons, Marcin, Piotr and Wojciech, and a daughter, Maria. In 2007 President Lech Kaczyński awarded him the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

Dowgiałło died on 21 June 2026, nine days before his eighty-eighth birthday, at the age of 87. Polish outlets including wPolsce24 and Fundacja CMS (Tygodnik Solidarność) reported the loss the same day, remembering him as an architect, Solidarity co-founder, Contract Sejm deputy and author of the Ballad of Janek Wiśniewski. English Wikipedia and the Sejm archive record the same death date.

I don't really know what to say here. I saw a clip with his ballad subtitled in a documentary about the 1970 protests years ago and it stuck with me, watched it again last night after I read this. 87. I don't have the words for the rest of it.
