My daughter showed me a clip of his months ago, didn't even know his name until today. She came downstairs crying this morning and I didn't understand why until she said his age out loud. Twenty five. That got me.

Janarious Mykel Wheeler, known to the world as Lil Poppa, was an American rapper, singer and songwriter from Jacksonville, Florida, whose melodic, unguarded songs about grief, loyalty and survival made him one of the most distinctive voices in Southern hip-hop. He was born in Jacksonville on March 18, 2000, and died in Fulton County, Georgia, on February 18, 2026, at the age of 25.
He grew up moving between his mother's home on Jacksonville's Eastside and the Westside home of his grandmother and aunt. His mother gave him the nickname Poppa, and he added "Lil" because he was always around older kids. As a child he lived with a chronic blood disease that sometimes left him bedridden. Music came early: inspired by his oldest brother, Chi Chi, he began writing songs for his church at seven and was performing raps there by ten. At twelve he built a makeshift studio in his closet and recorded on a laptop with a Radio Shack microphone, listening closely to Bow Wow, Boosie Badazz and Webbie, Lil Wayne, Chief Keef, Kodak Black and Meek Mill, whom he called his all-time favourite rapper.
As a teenager he was a member of the Jacksonville rap group Cutt Circle and was featured on their song "Lions, Tigers, and Bears" (2014). He then began releasing his own mixtapes as That Boy Poppa, starting with Est. 2000 (2016) and Life After Desi (2017), with the influential local DJ Bigga Rankin backing and promoting his early tapes. In 2018 he survived a shooting in his hometown in which close friends were killed. He turned that experience into "Purple Hearts", a somber song of survivor's guilt that XXL called an audio diary. The track and its video spread far beyond Jacksonville, anchored his mixtape Under Investigation, and drew the attention of major labels.
In 2019 he signed with Rule #1 and Interscope Records. That year brought Under Investigation 2, with "Eternal Living" featuring Polo G, later certified gold by the RIAA, and the mixtape Almost Normal. Evergreen Wildchild 2 followed in 2020, along with a feature on Mozzy's "Pricetag" with Polo G. His debut studio album, Blessed, I Guess (May 2021), reached the Billboard 200 and won strong reviews, with Pitchfork scoring it 7.3 and AllMusic praising his potent songwriting. Its song "Love & War", which he named as one of everybody's favourites, was remixed with Queen Naija and certified gold in 2026.
In April 2022 he signed with Yo Gotti's Collective Music Group (CMG), marking the deal with the single "H Spot". Under Investigation 3 arrived a week later, and he joined Yo Gotti, Moneybagg Yo and Mozzy on "Big League", the official theme of the 2022 NBA Finals. Heavy Is the Head (2022) reached No. 4 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart, and Pitchfork wrote that he subverted cliche "through real human emotion". He kept up a steady pace with Half Man, Half Vamp (2023), the EP It's Me, I'm The Problem (2023), Wee Are Who We Are (2024) and Almost Normal Again (2025), supported by his first headlining tour, which ended in Jacksonville. On February 13, 2026, he released the single "Out of Town Bae", and a Birthday Bash concert was planned in New Orleans for March.
Lil Poppa was private and openly wary of fame. He told XXL in 2020 that he liked to keep to himself and needed time to think, and he spoke candidly to HotNewHipHop in 2022 about losing his passion for the business. That honesty, delivered through a soft, melodic flow, is what his listeners connected with. He was the father of a young son, Kofi J'nar, known as PJ, with Toie Roberts, the eldest daughter of rapper Rick Ross.
On the morning of February 18, 2026, after a single-car crash on Interstate 85 near Hapeville, Georgia, he met his manager in a nearby hotel parking lot. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. The Fulton County Medical Examiner ruled his death a suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Tributes came from Meek Mill, Yo Gotti, Lil Duval, Boosie Badazz, Mozzy, Dej Loaf, Nardo Wick, Rob49, Yungeen Ace and Lil Baby, and CMG called him "one of those rare artists who thoughtfully poured his pain, growth and truth into his art." Hundreds of people filled Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville for his public funeral on March 7, 2026, which his family also livestreamed for fans.
He is remembered as Jacksonville's storyteller: a young man who said he wanted to be "the next rap artist coming out of my city", and who became exactly that. If you or someone you know is struggling, in the United States you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
