Lisa Koppel

Lisa Gundelfinger Koppel was a Johannesburg attorney and the wife of South African musician Daniel "Danny K" Koppel. She trained and practised as a lawyer in the legal world associated with her father, well known attorney Billy Gundelfinger, and kept a deliberately low public profile even as her husband became one of the country's most familiar recording artists and performers.

She married Danny K in 2012. Together they raised three children, two sons and a daughter. Friends and colleagues later remembered her as warm, private and devoted to family and to her legal work. She was rarely a headline figure in her own right, but she appeared with her husband at award shows and public events over the years, and those who knew her through the Gundelfinger firm spoke of a careful, grounded professional life away from the entertainment spotlight.

In November 2023 she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. According to Danny K, she chose to keep the diagnosis and treatment private, mainly to protect their young children from public pressure during a long and difficult illness. Only a small circle of family and close friends knew while she pursued care in South Africa and abroad for nearly three years. Danny K later said the family had searched for hope at home and around the world, "pursuing every treatment and every opportunity available," but could not save her.

Lisa Koppel died on Sunday, 9 August 2026, aged 41. The death was confirmed to the media two days later by Danny K's mother, Pam Koppel, and by a joint statement from the Koppel and Gundelfinger families. News broke on South African Women's Day and brought an outpouring of condolences from fans, fellow musicians and members of the legal community who knew her through her father's practice.

Danny K shared detailed tributes on Instagram, describing her "extraordinary strength and determination" and asking for prayers, compassion and privacy. He wrote that he had lost the wife he worshipped and that their three children had lost an extraordinary mother. He and his family said they would carry forward her wish to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and encourage early screening, a purpose she had hoped to lead herself one day. His father, Gavin Koppel, posted a poem titled "My Promise" on Facebook, thanking the public for solidarity and pledging to turn grief into compassion for others who need understanding. Weeks later, on 19 September 2026, Danny K posted an Instagram throwback captioned "Forever @lisak8_," a quiet reminder that her memory remained close for the family and for fans who had followed their story.
