Came across this just now while reading about families deported under Soviet rule, his parents included, and how they made it back to Lithuania in 1957. Never heard of Skuodas before tonight but ten years as mayor and 26 as a councillor says everything about the kind of man he was. Rest easy, sir.

Liudvikas Žukauskas was a Lithuanian local politician and engineer who served as mayor of Skuodas District Municipality for a decade and sat on the municipal council for more than a quarter of a century. He died on 4 November 2026, aged 73. The Skuodas District Municipality announced his death the same day in a memorial notice that described his life and work as closely bound to the Skuodas region.
He was born on 15 December 1952 in Bolshaya Kosul, Bogotol District, Krasnoyarsk Krai, in the Soviet Union, where his parents Petronėlė and Pranciškus Žukauskas had been deported by Soviet authorities. In the autumn of 1957 the family returned to Lithuania. He attended Skuodas secondary school from 1959 to 1970 and in 1975 graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Agriculture as a hydrotechnical engineer.
His early career was in land reclamation and construction management. After a year as a junior research fellow at the academy he worked as a technician and foreman at the Skuodas melioration construction board, then held senior production posts at the Akmenė melioration board from 1977 to 1986 and again at Skuodas from 1986 to 1992. From 1992 to 1997 he was director of UAB Pleištas.
In 1997 he became mayor of Skuodas District Municipality, a post he held for ten years until 2007. Those years required hard decisions about everyday life in the district's settlements and about the region's future. He also sat on the council of the Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania. After leaving the mayoralty he was technical director from 2007 to 2012 and then general director from 2012 to 2015 of UAB Kuršasta. He remained a Skuodas District municipal councillor from 1995 to 2021, one of the longer modern tenures on that council, and was active in the Lithuanian Christian Democrats and later Homeland Union - Lithuanian Christian Democrats in the district.
He married Zita Žukauskienė in 1972; they had two children, Virgilija Samauskienė, born in 1976, and Vilmantas Žukauskas, born in 1980. The municipal memorial placed him among the people whose professional lives are inseparable from the history of Skuodas District self-government. The cause of death has not been made public.
