Mariusz Urbaniak was a Polish footballer who played as a midfielder. A youth product of Granica Bogatynia and Zagłębie Lubin, he was part of the Zagłębie side that won the club's first Polish championship in the 1990-91 season, and he later spent six years with Miedź Legnica, with whom he played against AS Monaco in the European Cup Winners' Cup.
He was born in Zgorzelec, in Lower Silesia, on 22 June 1972, and began playing at Granica Bogatynia. At 15 he joined the youth ranks of Zagłębie Lubin, and in 1990 he won a bronze medal at the Polish junior championships with the club's juniors before being promoted to the first team that same year.
He made his top flight debut on 30 March 1991 in a goalless draw with Legia Warsaw and played nine league matches in the 1990-91 season, which ended with Zagłębie's surprise title. On 2 October 1991 he played in the club's European Cup win over Brøndby. The championship, won by a club from the copper mining town of Lubin that had never before finished top of the Polish league, is still remembered as one of the great surprises of Polish football, and Urbaniak was among the youngest members of that squad. In all he made 23 Ekstraklasa appearances for Zagłębie before moving to Miedź Legnica in 1992. There he made 94 second division appearances, scored eleven goals across more than a hundred games, and played in both legs of the 1992-93 Cup Winners' Cup tie against Monaco.
After a loan spell with Karkonosze Jelenia Góra, whom he helped to promotion in 1996-97, and an injury at the end of the 1997-98 season, he returned to Granica Bogatynia and also took a job with a construction company. He later played for VfB Zittau in Germany, Nysa Zgorzelec and Jaśnica Opolno Zdrój, was player-manager of Granica, and coached Bazalt Sulików. Teammates called him "Hiszpan", the Spaniard, because of his youthful passion for Spanish football and FC Barcelona.
Mariusz Urbaniak died suddenly at work on Friday 23 October 2026, aged 54. His son Mateusz announced the news, and Zagłębie Lubin's museum and Miedź Legnica paid tribute to a member of one of the most celebrated teams in the club's history.
