My Turkish neighbour in Cedar Rapids used to translate his poems for me over coffee, and one line always stuck, the one about choosing a plain voice over a simple one. I never saw his films, I only knew the poet from Sydney. Ninety years, and he kept writing in his own language the whole way through.
