François Rossé was a French composer, pianist, and improviser, born in Alsace on 16 June 1945. He died on Friday 4 September 2026. Sud Ouest, the Gironde paper that had profiled him a decade earlier, said he was 81 and that he lived in Léognan. ResMusica, which announced the death on 7 September 2026, called him a free electron of contemporary music and gave his age as 80. The birth date pinned by his publisher Billaudot and by Encyclopaedia Universalis is 16 June 1945, so 81 is the age used here. He turned 81 on 16 June 2026. A 2016 Sud Ouest profile, published on 18 August 2016, said he was then 71, which matches a June 1945 birth.
This page is that composer and pianist. The display name Francois Rosse is the ASCII form of François Rossé. It is not Jean-François Rossé, a different person mixed into search suggestions with journalism, RTS, and psychologist queries. It is not Joseph Rossé, the Alsatian politician who lived from 1892 to 1951. There is no English Wikipedia biography. The French article is the one linked on this page. English Wikipedia's list of deaths in 2026 places him on 4 September, age 81, as a French composer and pianist.
Billaudot places the birth in Reichshoffen. Universalis places it in Strasbourg. Both pin the same day. Those two places are not collapsed into one. He came to formal music late. Billaudot and Universalis agree that he began serious instrumental study at 17, after an almost self-taught start at the piano. At the Conservatoire de Strasbourg he worked with the pianist Alphonse Foehr. Billaudot also names piano study at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with Jeannine Bonjean. Universalis says he won a first prize in piano at Strasbourg two years after starting there, then went on to the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris.
In Paris he was one of the last pupils of Olivier Messiaen. He also studied with Betsy Jolas, Ivo Malec, and Paul Méfano. France Musique's 2017 note on a Tapage nocturne recording adds Nancy to the conservatory path, between Strasbourg and Paris. He did not treat that academy training as a closed house. Jazz, traditional musics, poetry, theatre, and electroacoustic work sat beside the written score. ResMusica, writing the day the death was announced, said improvisation, at the piano and with other musicians, was for him a way of thinking composition.
In 1974 he was appointed professor of analysis at the conservatory in Bordeaux, then the CNR. Sud Ouest, in its 8 September 2026 notice, dates those analysis classes from 1974 to 1985 and says students remembered the range of the teaching and the fact that he did not take himself too solemnly. There he met the saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix, who pushed him to write for saxophone with the new techniques of the instrument. That exploration spread to the rest of the orchestra, and to instruments most composers would not score, including fire engines. The piece O Yelp, listed on the French Wikipedia work list as a 1989 work of about eight and a half minutes, is scored for three saxophones, a solo American-style fire truck with four horns, and nine tutti fire trucks.
The catalogue is large, and the sources do not agree on the count. French Wikipedia speaks of about 400 opus numbers. ResMusica says about 700. Billaudot, in a biography that appears to reflect an earlier point in the career, said more than 160 works by 1993. What is stable is the range: piano and organ, strings, winds with a special place for saxophone, voice, choirs, orchestra, stage music, and pieces that mix orality and writing. Le Frêne égaré (1978), for alto saxophone, about 10 minutes and published by Billaudot, is the title that search suggestions still attach to his name. Wild Strings, dated 2016 on the French work list, was written for Trio Polycordes. The opera Simplicius (1996), to a text by Gaston Jung, runs about an hour and a half. ECCE JOANNA, on Joan of Arc, was created in Rouen in December 2008. He also wrote poetic and theoretical texts in French and German. In 1987 he co-founded the association Interprètes et Compositeurs d'Aquitaine pour la Recherche (Groupe ICAR).
Honours arrived without changing the tone. In 1991 he was named Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. The same year, as he liked to point out, the Amicale des Cantalès et des Buronniers des Monts d'Aubrac made him maistre dégustateur d'Aligot. French Wikipedia pairs the two titles on purpose: the scholar of Messiaen, and the epicurean. The aligot title is a local gastronomic honour, not a musical prize. In 1994 the SACEM national prize recognized the body of the work. The 2016 Sud Ouest profile said he had also worked at the Ministry of Culture in the 1990s, had been invited to universities including one it named as North Western University in Chicago and the Université de Montréal, and had been a companion of the Théâtre des Quatre Saisons in Gradignan for several years. That profile should be read as a regional sketch, not as a full appointment list.
He lived the long second half of his life in the Bordeaux region. The 2016 article called him Bordelais for forty years and Léognanais for almost as long. He told Sophie Neupert: "Je vois la création comme un moyen de rencontre, avec un challenge musical à la clef." He also said that in his work he referred to the whole Western memory, from Greek monody to more complex polyphony, and to other cultures of the planet. One piece he wanted to see staged in Bordeaux was Oînos, about forty-five minutes, built around wine, using about 200 children in groups of 50, two opposed choirs, and an orchestra, drawing on Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal and a novel, De la Terre à l'Ether. The paper described him improvising around a glass of Pessac-Léognan, at ease with Bach, Schumann, Maurice Ohana, and other traditions.
The public record of the playing is on his own YouTube uploads, on the channel named françois rossé. They include a solo improvisation at the Mucem in Marseille on 16 September 2013, billed in the 2016 article as a homage to Ohana; an improvisation in the language of Robert Schumann recorded at Studio Elkar in San Sebastián in 2010; and a 27 October 2011 duo with the tambourine player Carlo Rizzo at the Villa Aurélienne in Fréjus, cut into several clips on the same channel. Those clips are of him playing, not tributes filmed after the death. On 5 October 2017 he recorded an interview and piano improvisations at Radio France studio 107 for Tapage nocturne. Partners named across Wikipedia, ResMusica, and France Musique include Beñat Achiary, Bernard Lubat, Daniel Kientzy, Sylvain Kassap, Gérard Siracusa, Michel Etxekopar, Denis Badault, Jean-Marc Padovani, and the storyteller René Martinez. Marie-Bernadette Charrier, artistic director of Ensemble Proxima Centauri, is described by Sud Ouest only in paraphrase, as saluting a singular artist and a generous companion on the road. The exact sentence is not printed, so it is not quoted here as her words. On 26 July 2016, Rhaps for violin and piano was played at the Maison des vins de Graves, in Portets, during the Rencontres musicales internationales des Graves. The 2016 profile said he had also been in residence there in 2009.
