My mom called me at 6am my time to tell me. All I could think of was that line, "I try not to fear." Hard to live by, worth trying.

Mary Jo "MJ" Shannon, born Mary Jo Campbell, was a La Jolla shopkeeper, a one-time model and etiquette teacher, and the much-loved grandmother of television's Kardashian-Jenner family. To millions of viewers she was simply MJ, the sharp, warm and funny matriarch who turned up across two decades of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Kardashians. To her daughter Kris Jenner she was "the heart of our family." She died at a Los Angeles hospital on July 16, 2026, ten days before what would have been her 92nd birthday.
She was born on July 26, 1934, in Hope, Arkansas, to Lou Ethel Campbell and Gordon Lowe Campbell. According to her family's obituary, she spent part of her childhood in Mississippi before the family settled in San Diego, California. There her mother later married Jim Fairbanks, who became Mary Jo's beloved stepfather and, in the obituary's words, "one of her greatest loves until the day he passed away." Her mother also ran a business of her own, a shop called Candelabra on Prospect Street in La Jolla, which helped set the pattern for Mary Jo's own working life.
As a young woman MJ worked as a model and later taught at an etiquette school, according to People and other profiles. At 18 she married her high school sweetheart, but the marriage lasted only two months. In 1954 she married Robert True "Bob" Houghton, and she gave birth to Kristen Mary Houghton, the future Kris Jenner, in San Diego on November 5, 1955. A second daughter, Karen Houghton, followed in 1958. The couple divorced in 1962, and MJ raised her two girls on her own for a time before marrying businessman Harry Shannon, who helped raise both daughters in San Diego and whom Kris came to call her dad. MJ and Harry were together for about four decades, until his death in 2003, which press reports linked to a car accident.
Business was the other constant of her life. Following in her mother's footsteps, she opened Candles of La Jolla on Girard Avenue and then founded Shannon & Company, a children's boutique that People dates to 1980. Its longtime home was on Wall Street in La Jolla, and it became, in the words of her obituary, "a destination for families who came from near and far, known for its thoughtfully curated gifts, toys, and timeless charm." Kris worked in the shop as a teenager, and Kim Kardashian later said her grandmother gave her her very first job there. In 2016 the store moved to the La Plaza La Jolla complex on Girard Avenue, and MJ told the La Jolla Light that families who once shopped for their children were now coming back for their grandchildren. She kept working until she retired at the age of 82.
When Keeping Up with the Kardashians premiered on E! in October 2007, MJ became part of one of the most watched families in reality television. She appeared throughout the series and later on Hulu's The Kardashians, where viewers saw her teasing the family about their extravagant lifestyles, offering frank advice, sitting for an emotional interview with Kris, and celebrating milestone birthdays surrounded by four generations. The BBC noted that she drew her own fanbase for her one-liners and her outspoken accounts of beating cancer twice. Her family said she survived both breast cancer and colon cancer.
Her private life sometimes collided with the family's fame. In April 2021 an unretouched poolside photo of granddaughter Khloé Kardashian spread online, and takedown notices sent on the family's behalf identified MJ as the person who took the picture and therefore its copyright owner. The family's spokesperson said the image had been posted by an assistant by mistake.
MJ outlived her younger daughter. Karen Houghton died on March 18, 2024, at 65. That July the family marked MJ's 90th birthday with a party filmed for The Kardashians, where she said her biggest accomplishment was having her two daughters. A garden-themed party followed for her 91st birthday in 2025.
Mary Jo Shannon died on July 16, 2026, at the age of 91. Kris Jenner announced the news on Instagram that day, writing, "Today, we said goodbye to my beautiful Mommy MJ." Her death certificate, reported by Us Weekly, listed acute cardiopulmonary arrest, with acute respiratory failure and metastatic lung cancer as contributing conditions; she was cremated on July 23. On July 26, the day she would have turned 92, the family held a Celebration of Life at La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. She was survived by Kris, seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and her obituary said she would be remembered "for her warmth, entrepreneurial spirit, love of La Jolla, and the lasting mark she left on the community she cherished."
