Melvin Sephus was an American R&B singer, songwriter and musician from Cleveland, Ohio, best known as a founding member of The Rude Boys, the vocal group behind the 1991 number one R&B hit "Written All Over Your Face." His death at the age of 61 was announced on October 29, 2026. A cause of death has not been made public.
Sephus came up in Cleveland's busy late 1980s music community. There he joined Larry "Bingo" Marcus and the brothers Edward Lee "Buddy" Banks and Joe Little III in a harmony group that took the name The Rude Boys. SoulTracks also lists Dwight Thompson among the young singers in the group's early Cleveland days. The group was discovered by Gerald Levert, the Cleveland singer, songwriter and producer and son of The O'Jays' lead singer Eddie Levert. Levert took the young singers under his wing and helped them sign with Atlantic Records.
The Rude Boys' debut album, Rude Awakening, arrived in 1990. Its second single, "Written All Over Your Face," featured Gerald Levert on lead vocals with the group behind him. It went to number one on the Billboard R&B chart, reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was named the number one R&B single of the year at the 1991 Billboard Music Awards. The group then showed it was no one hit wonder. The ballad "Are You Lonely for Me" also went to number one on the R&B chart, and "Heaven" reached the R&B top 20. The Rude Boys toured internationally, opening for Levert and The O'Jays. In that period the group's keyboardist and musical director was Frank McComb, who later became a soul star in his own right.
A second Atlantic album, Rude House, followed in 1992. Its single "My Kinda Girl" reached number 4 on the R&B chart, and "Go Ahead and Cry" also charted. The album did not match the success of the debut, the Atlantic deal ended, and the group split. Some members reunited for the 1997 album Rude as Ever, which was not a commercial success.
Sephus did more than sing harmony. SoulTracks credits him as a talented singer, songwriter and musician who co-wrote and co-produced "I Got Your Back" and sang backing vocals on Father and Son, the 1995 album by Gerald and Eddie Levert. Those credits tied him closely to the Levert family, whose mentorship launched his career.
After Gerald Levert died in 2006, The Rude Boys reunited to perform at his funeral. In 2019 the group was inducted into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in Detroit. Health problems had kept Sephus from performing with the group's surviving and touring members in recent years, according to Cleveland radio host Sam Sylk, but his name stayed bound to the group's catalog.
Larry Marcus died in 2016 and Buddy Banks in 2020. With Sephus gone, Joe Little III is the last surviving member of the best known original lineup. News of his death prompted tributes from Cleveland friends, fans and R&B media. One longtime friend wrote that he had lost one of his best friends. More than three decades after their release, "Written All Over Your Face" and "Are You Lonely for Me" remain staples of early 1990s new jack swing and quiet storm R&B.
Details about his survivors and funeral arrangements had not been made public at the time of writing.
