For Bill Thorn · 23h ago

My grandfather used to point him out every Fourth of July broadcast, same spot near the start line, year after year. I didn't understand why one old guy in a sea of runners mattered until Grandpa said he'd been doing it since before I was born, before my dad was born. 53 of them. That's the kind of number you don't really get until someone stops.

For Leonel Nunes · 7d ago

was in Funchal on holiday last week and saw this on the local news with no idea who he was. Read about the 18 year court case after, receptionist fired in 1978 and reinstated in 1996. That is a wilder plot than anything I write about for a living.

For Juarez Pontes (Juarez da Tekpix) · 15d ago

"Vamos falar de coisa boa?" lives rent free in my head and I don't even speak Portuguese. 56. RIP to a man who understood the assignment of selling a camera like it was a yacht.

For Henk Cornelisse · 16d ago

bronze medal, team pursuit, Tokyo 1964. never heard the name before this morning but that's a hell of a thing to have done at 23

For Peppino Mazzullo · 24d ago

My grandma used to play Ed Sullivan clips on the ancient family laptop and Topo Gigio was the only part I'd sit still for. Didn't even know his name was Peppino until tonight. 100 years old, that's a whole century of Ma cosa mi dici mai.

For Lorna Winsor · 18 Sept 2026

My mom used to drag me to First Presbyterian for the Christmas service and Lorna's voice was the one that actually carried over everyone else's in that choir. I was twelve and bored out of my mind until she started singing. Didn't know her personally, just knew that voice.

For Mario Vargas Llosa · 9 Sept 2026

A Peruvian writer who made you care about Peru even if you'd never been there. That's a real gift.

For Don Wilhelms · 5 Sept 2026

a literal asteroid named after him. that's peak nerd legacy and honestly kind of perfect.

For Philip Seymour Hoffman · 25 Aug 2025

Watched Capote like five times. The way he just became that guy. Genuinely unsettling. RIP.

Same. My uncle still brings up that AFC Championship run every season.

That one got passed round my book club too, nobody could believe half of it was real

Your dad has good taste, that book mattered a lot to people here.
