Cowell was born on April 9, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio, to Merville Bert Cowell Sr. and Dorothy Cowell. He spent thirty eight and a half years in machine repair at GM Powertrain, a General Motors facility, where pride in careful work came naturally to him. Colleagues and family remembered a gift for fixing almost anything, with particular skill in mechanical, plumbing, and electrical tasks. He put those talents to personal use as well, helping to build two of his family's homes over the years.
Outside of work, Cowell was a devoted member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for more than four decades. His family described a life grounded in Christian faith and quiet service. He was also a sports fan, especially of University of Michigan football, and he kept a lifelong love of trains, including model trains that he pursued as a hobby.
He married Carole Cowell, who survives him. Together they raised daughter Wendy Cedoz and son David Cowell. He became a grandfather to four grandchildren, Joshua Cedoz, Thomas Cedoz, Karyn Bauer, and Kaitlyn Sanders, and a great grandfather to seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters Jan and Linda, and is also survived by his sister Mary and brothers James Sr. and John.
Merville Bert Cowell Jr. died peacefully on September 17, 2026, at the age of 84. No cause of death has been made public. Visitation was held on September 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Reeb Funeral Home in Sylvania, with the funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m. The family asked that memorial contributions be made in his name to Emmanuel Baptist Church. He is remembered as a man of faith, craftsmanship, and steady devotion to the people he loved.
