Mohamed Omar was a 44 year old Egyptian man who had lived in the United Kingdom since around 2005. He was living in a house of multiple occupation (HMO) on Great Clowes Street in the Broughton area of Salford, Greater Manchester, at the time of his death. Friends and family described him as a devoted and hard working father who, according to those who knew him, was working to build a better life for the people he loved. He was not a public figure in the conventional sense; he became known to the wider public only through the news coverage of his death and the murder investigation that followed.
On the evening of Tuesday 6 October 2026, Greater Manchester Police were called to the address on Great Clowes Street at around 7.50pm after Omar was found unresponsive. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the property a short time later. Police subsequently arrested five men, aged between 24 and 35, on suspicion of murder. Four of the men were later released on bail while enquiries continued, and one was released under investigation, according to reports as of 12 October 2026. No charges had been announced at that point, and the cause of death had not been made public.
Omar's death prompted an outpouring of tribute from people who knew him. His daughter, Layla, wrote that her father had 'an energy that could light up a room' and said he would 'live in my heart forever'. A close friend, named in reports as Lee Yassein, also paid tribute to him as a best friend. Family members said they were 'heartbroken' by his death and described him as someone who worked hard throughout his life and gave much of himself to the people around him.
His family said they were raising funds to help repatriate his body to Egypt so that he could be reunited with loved ones there, saying he 'deserved the chance to return home'. As of this writing, funeral and repatriation arrangements had not been finalised, and Greater Manchester Police's investigation into the circumstances of his death remained ongoing.
Because the case is an active and recent murder investigation, many details about Mohamed Omar's earlier life, including his family background, work history and full personal circumstances, have not been reported. This page will be updated as verified information becomes available.
