Nathaniel Waena

Sir Nathaniel Rahumaea Waena, the fifth Governor-General of Solomon Islands and a long serving parliamentarian and civil servant, died on Saturday morning, September 19, 2026, after a long illness. He was 80. Prime Minister Matthew Wale, speaking for the Government and the GREAT Coalition, said the nation mourned a national leader who devoted many years to serving the people and the country's constitutional institutions.

Born on November 1, 1945, in Su'utaluhia on Ulawa in what was then the British Solomon Islands, Waena represented Ulawa-Ugi constituency in Makira-Ulawa Province in the National Parliament from 1984 to 2004. He served as Deputy Speaker before becoming Assistant Prime Minister and Minister of Provincial Government in 2000, and later Minister for National Unity, Peace and Reconciliation during the years after the ethnic tensions. He also held senior civil service roles, including as a permanent secretary, experience that shaped his later vice-regal work.

On June 15, 2004, Parliament elected him Governor-General. He received 27 of 41 votes, defeating incumbent Sir John Lapli and former Prime Minister Sir Peter Kenilorea. He took office on July 7, 2004, and served a five year term until July 7, 2009, under Queen Elizabeth II and successive prime ministers including Allan Kemakeza, Snyder Rini, Manasseh Sogavare, and Derek Sikua. He was knighted soon after assuming office and later awarded the Cross of Solomon Islands. In June 2009 Frank Kabui was elected to succeed him after a multi round parliamentary ballot.

Solomon Islands National University and other public institutions joined government tributes, recalling Waena as a founding leader whose career bridged parliament, cabinet, the public service, and the vice-regal office. The Island Sun reported that his service as Member of Parliament and as Governor-General would be remembered with respect and gratitude. Funeral and memorial arrangements were not fully detailed in the first national announcements published on September 20.

Sir Nathaniel's public life spanned the transition from colonial administration to an independent parliamentary democracy, the post conflict peace years, and a full term as the Queen's representative.
