my mom called me about this, she'd seen something about a Hero of Labour of Stavropol award from a couple years back. I didn't know much about him but seventy isn't old

Nikolay Timofeyevich Velikdan (Russian: Николай Тимофеевич Великдань; also spelled Nikolai Velikdan) was a Russian agronomist, farm manager and regional statesman who spent almost half a century in the agriculture and government of Stavropol Krai. He served as first deputy chairman of the Stavropol Krai government from 2012 to 2021 and as chairman of the Duma of Stavropol Krai, the region's legislature, from 30 September 2021. He died on 25 September 2026 at the age of 70, days after winning a seat in the new eighth convocation of the Duma.
Velikdan was born on 6 March 1956 in the small settlement of Sovetskoye Runo in Ipatovsky District, Stavropol Krai. He and his twin brother Viktor were sons of Timofey Prokopyevich Velikdan, a respected machine operator and later brigade leader at the local state farm, and Maria Tarasovna Velikdan, a farm worker. The farm bred fine-fleece sheep, and the household of four children kept a cow, pigs, sheep and poultry. Nikolay read widely from the family library and dreamed of becoming a pilot or even a cosmonaut, but his father decided that both twins would stay on the land. In 1971 he took them to the Grigoropolisskaya agricultural technical school in Novoalexandrovsky District to study agronomy. Velikdan later admitted that the studies felt like a burden at first, then became a calling.
After military service from 1975 to 1977 with the air forces near Kyiv, he began work in 1977 at the Pravokubansky state farm near Nevinnomyssk in Kochubeyevsky District, which grew vegetables and fruit. He was hired straight away as leader of a vegetable-growing brigade of several dozen people and focused on cutting manual labour and raising productivity. While working he studied by correspondence at the Stavropol Agricultural Institute (1980 to 1985), graduating as an agronomist. He joined the Communist Party, was made secretary of the farm's party committee and then deputy director for production, overseeing vegetables, orchards and a cannery.
In 1987, on the recommendation of the regional party committee, he became director of the Krasnaya Zarya state farm. He then served as deputy general director for production of the Nevinnomyssk agrofirm (1989 to 1990), returned to Pravokubansky as first deputy director and chief agronomist (1990 to 1992), and led the reorganised joint stock company Pravokubanskoye from 1992 to 1997. In a 2016 interview he said he was raised high twice and fell painfully twice, losing posts for stubborn positions such as his argument for winter greenhouse vegetable production and his opposition in 1991 to splitting farmland into individual shares.
From 1997 to 1999 he was first deputy head of the Kochubeyevsky District administration and head of its agriculture department, coordinating some 25 large farm enterprises. He promoted enlarged crop rotations and the so-called Astrakhan technology for vegetables, and helped develop greenhouse complexes. He went on to head the Kamenskaya machine and technology station (1999 to 2003), the Urozhay trading house in Nevinnomyssk (2003) and the Agroton-S company in Stavropol (2003 to 2004), and spent a period working in Tula Oblast before returning to run the district's agriculture department again (2005 to 2008). He was deputy minister of agriculture of Stavropol Krai from 2008 to 2009 and head of the Trunovsky District administration from 2009 to 2012.
In May 2012 he joined the regional government and served until September 2021 as first deputy chairman overseeing the agro-industrial complex, under governors Valery Zerenkov and Vladimir Vladimirov. During those years the region adopted around nine development programmes for agriculture, focused on greenhouses, poultry, fish farming, vineyards, orchards, storage and logistics, as Russia pursued import substitution. He also chaired the board of trustees of the Stavropol branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
In September 2021 Velikdan was elected to the Duma of Stavropol Krai for single-member district No. 8, covering Ipatovsky and Trunovsky districts, with about 59 percent of the vote, and on 30 September 2021 deputies unanimously elected him chairman. Colleagues said he ran the chamber "like a conductor." Under his leadership the seventh convocation held 64 sessions and passed 713 laws, gathered about 500 voter mandates, and adopted laws on support for military personnel and their families, night-time quiet, stray animals, pay for police and rescuers, and volunteers. In July 2022 the European Union placed him under sanctions over public support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and Ukraine and Switzerland followed. He received the regional medals For Valiant Labour (three degrees) and For Services to Stavropol Krai, and in 2024 the title Hero of Labour of Stavropol.
Velikdan rarely spoke about his private life. In 2016 he said he had been married for 38 years and had two children and three grandchildren. He lived in the settlement of Pravokubansky, loved fishing and his garden, and named cherry varenyky as his favourite dish.
In the September 2026 elections he won a seat in the eighth convocation on the United Russia list. Governor Vladimir Vladimirov announced his death on 25 September 2026. No cause of death was made public. A civil memorial was held on 26 September at the Stavropol Krai Drama Theatre, where Metropolitan Kirill of Stavropol and Nevinnomyssk led a memorial service, and he was buried in his native Sovetskoye Runo. On 1 October 2026 Lyubov Makovskaya was elected to succeed him as chairman.
