92 years old. I don't know Brazilian TV well but I read he basically built it from 1953 onward, camera work to directing. Thinking of his wife Marilu Torres tonight.

Nilton Adriano Travesso was one of the builders of Brazilian television. Born on 20 May 1934 in Sorocaba, in the state of São Paulo, to José Traverso (later Travesso) and Adelina Damiani, both children of Italian immigrants, he grew up close to the stage. As a young man he frequented opera at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. In 1953, at nineteen, he learned that Paulo Machado de Carvalho was preparing to inaugurate a television station. He applied for a camera job, was hired, and joined the founding team of TV Record.
Over twenty-one years at Record he worked as producer and director. He staged Teatro Cacilda Becker and directed early telenovelas by Ciro Bassini, Ivani Ribeiro and Roberto Freire. He ran talk and variety shows including Bate Papo with Silveira Sampaio, La Revue Chic with Jô Soares, and Dia a Dia with Cidinha Campos. He helped produce the first Festivals of Brazilian Popular Music that launched a generation of MPB artists, and directed international seasons that brought Marlene Dietrich, Charles Aznavour, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong and other world stars to Brazilian screens. In the 1960s he helped form the celebrated Equipe A with Manoel Carlos, Raul Duarte and Antônio Augusto Amaral de Carvalho (Tuta). That team shaped Hebe, Esta Noite se Improvisa, O Fino da Bossa and related specials. He also directed Família Trapo and other comedy landmarks.
In 1974 José Bonifácio de Oliveira Sobrinho (Boni) brought him to Rede Globo to help launch Fantástico in colour. At Globo he helped create TV Mulher, Som Brasil and the children's hit Balão Mágico, worked on Chico Anysio Show and Vídeo Show, and was associated with novels including Sinhá Moça and Direito de Amar. With Ney Matogrosso he produced América do Sul, often cited among the first music videos made for Brazilian television, shot outside the studio in a forest setting. In later years he also directed segments of Mais Você.
In 1987 he moved to Rede Manchete and, with Jayme Monjardim, built the network's teledramaturgy department. That effort underpinned Pantanal (1990), written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa, which competed with Globo for audience, as well as Ana Raio e Zé Trovão and Kananga do Japão. In 1994 he joined SBT to implant its drama department. Under his direction the network produced Éramos Seis with Irene Ravache, As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor, Sangue do Meu Sangue and Os Ossos do Barão. He later served as superintendent at Rede Bandeirantes, returned to Globo as a nucleus director, and again to SBT for programmes including Fora do Ar with Adriane Galisteu and Charme. He also directed Saia Justa on GNT and Todo Seu on TV Gazeta, and worked in radio with Jovem Pan.
In 2001 he founded the Nilton Travesso Oficina de Atores in Pinheiros, São Paulo, to train performers for television without abandoning theatre craft. The school later offered MEC-recognised technical training and DRT pathways. Colleagues remembered his patience behind the camera; he once told interviewers that television remained "fascinante" and that he preferred to work "escondidinho atrás das câmeras." He was married for many years to presenter and dancer Marilú Torres. Band reporting at his death said he was survived by his wife and a son.
In May 2016, after a robbery in São Paulo, he left Todo Seu and briefly worked in the United States on a film project before continuing media work in Brazil. On 6 November 2026 he died in São Paulo at Hospital Sírio-Libanês at the age of 92, of a generalized infection. A wake was held on 7 November at Funeral Home in Bela Vista. Across Record, Globo, Manchete, SBT, Band and Gazeta, Travesso left a map of how Brazilian entertainment television was invented, expanded and taught to the next generation.

In their own words
“É fascinante.”
Travesso on why he could not imagine doing anything but television, recalled in a Mais Você appearance with Ana Maria Braga (c. 2000), cited in g1 coverage.
“Escondidinho atrás das câmeras.”
How Travesso described preferring to work out of sight; quoted in g1/Jornal Nacional tributes after his death.
“Administrar o ego é uma das coisas mais insuportáveis de uma carreira.”
Travesso on career challenges, from a Pânico/Jovem Pan interview clip titled with that line.

He really did, Fantastico wouldn't exist without him.
