Orlando Jaikarran was a six year old boy from Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, in Region Five of Guyana. He lived with his father and two brothers, aged seven and ten, after his parents separated roughly two years before his death, with his mother continuing to support the children financially through the courts. He attended Bath Primary School and was, by family accounts, often taken along by his father on early morning fishing trips near the sea dam close to their home.
Orlando became the centre of a nationwide search after he was reported missing on the morning of October 14, 2026, when his two older brothers woke up and discovered he was not in the house. His father, Bharrat Jaikarran, reported the disappearance to the Fort Wellington Police Station, and police in Region Five launched a search that included the Bath Settlement backlands and surrounding areas. Within days, investigators grew suspicious of the father after obtaining surveillance footage that showed him travelling by motorcycle toward a canal near the sea dam with a child matching Orlando's description in the early hours of October 14, and later returning alone. Orlando's grandmother, Dhankumarie Gowkarran, has said she directly asked her son whether he had harmed the boy, which he denied at the time.
Orlando mattered to his community and to the country as a symbol of the vulnerability of young children, and his case drew intense public attention in Guyana as the search stretched on for nearly a week. His disappearance and the mounting evidence against his father prompted widespread concern among neighbours and officials, and his name became closely associated with a case that exposed painful questions about child protection within families.
Orlando died on or around October 14, 2026, though his body was not found until the early hours of October 20, 2026, when it was recovered from the Sea Dam Canal at Water Street, Block D, Bath Settlement, close to his home. Police have said his father confessed to killing him, reportedly after being told by a pujari, a Hindu priest, that Orlando was not his biological son. According to accounts given to police, the father is said to have taken Orlando to the canal under the pretext of an early morning fishing trip and thrown him into the water knowing the boy could not swim. A post-mortem examination was being arranged at Bailey's Funeral Home to formally establish the cause of death, and the investigation was continuing as of October 20, 2026. Guyana's Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, publicly condemned the death as 'horrible, cruel' and appealed to parents to protect and cherish their children, and the news prompted grief and outrage across the country.
