okay so I did not grow up with Afrigo Band, I found them maybe three years ago through a late night youtube spiral that started with something totally unrelated, some Congolese rumba documentary, and it just kept branching until I landed on a grainy clip of this guy on alto sax who did not look like he was performing so much as just living inside the song. that was Moses Matovu. I read he kept that band running from the mid seventies straight through, through all the stuff Uganda went through, coups and everything, and the band just kept playing on Fridays like clockwork, that part stuck with me more than any solo. I was making coffee when I saw the headline on my phone, killed in an assault, and I just stood there with the kettle going. seventy seven years old. he said once that the band would outlive him because he trained enough people to carry it, which is such a strange thing to say out loud about your own death decades early, like he was already making peace with being replaceable in the best way. anyway. edit: just looked it up, he has eleven kids, one of them plays sax too apparently.

227 was a landmark show. Lester Jenkins deserved every scene he got. Williams made you believe every bit of it.

She was 15 and she just said no. The whole system bent around that one refusal.

That song has helped so many of us. She knew what she was doing.
