My dad kept a battered copy of the BDM on the shelf next to his old Tintin albums and I used to flip through it after school just to look at the cover prices. Heard about this on a comics forum at 2am and just sat there. 90 years old, half a century of cataloguing, that's a whole life given to something most people never think twice about.

Michel Denni was a French bookseller, comics historian and writer, best known as a co-creator of the BDM, the encyclopaedic catalogue and price guide of French language comics that collectors have consulted for nearly half a century. To friends and colleagues he was simply Max, a nickname that his co-author Philippe Mellot traced to an intellectual rigour some compared to that of Maximilien Robespierre.
He was born on 14 June 1936 in Chelles, east of Paris, and trained as an engineer at the Ecole des Travaux Publics in Paris before turning to journalism. In 1962 he became a film critic for La Presse de Tunisie, worked with cooperatives in Oran and Algiers in the mid 1960s, and then wrote on Latin American politics for Tribune socialiste in Paris. A devotee of science fiction, he published a collection of stories, Mortibus, in 1967.
In 1968 he took over a small second hand bookshop on the rue Monge, the Librairie Lutece, which became a meeting place for lovers of cinema, crime fiction, the fantastic and comics, and from 1976 specialised entirely in collectable comics. In 1979, with Michel Bera and Philippe Mellot, he launched the BDM, Tresors de la bande dessinee. The first edition ran to sixty pages; the twenty fifth, published by Les Arenes in October 2026, runs to some two thousand.
He edited Le Collectionneur de bandes dessinees from 1979 to 2008, wrote for Charlie Mensuel and Pilote et Charlie in the 1980s, co-wrote the comic Jelly Shawn with Mellot, and co-authored reference works including Les Aventures de la BD for Gallimard and the BD Guide encyclopaedia for Omnibus. From 2003 he wrote the column L'Echo du BDM for the website BDzoom. He also wrote fantasy novels under the pseudonym Kybalion, and in 1999 was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
Michel Denni died in October 2026 at the age of 90. A civil death notice gives the date as Tuesday 20 October, while Mellot's tribute on BDzoom gave Thursday 22 October in Paris. His funeral was arranged for 30 October in Paris. He is remembered as one of the great historians of French comics.
