57. That's all I keep thinking, 57 is nothing. Praying for Miriam and for Shana, that's a hard loss for a family to carry.

Patrick Muldoon was an American actor, producer and rock singer whose easy charm made him one of the defining faces of 1990s American television. Soap fans knew him as Austin Reed, the boxer he originated on NBC's Days of Our Lives, prime-time viewers knew him as the scheming Richard Hart on Melrose Place, and science fiction audiences knew him as the cocky pilot Zander Barcalow in Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. Behind the camera he became a busy producer of independent films. He died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Beverly Hills on 19 April 2026, aged 57.
He was born William Patrick Muldoon III on 27 September 1968 in San Pedro, the harbour district of Los Angeles. His father, William Patrick Muldoon II, was a personal injury lawyer and his mother, Deanna Muldoon (born Petrov), was a homemaker. He once explained that his father's side of the family was Irish and his mother's side Croatian, and that both were big families. He grew up in what he called "a family of lifeguards", a fiercely athletic household, and attended Loyola High School, a Jesuit school in Los Angeles, where he played football.
At the University of Southern California he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and played tight end for the USC Trojans, collecting two Rose Bowl rings. He later admitted that being run over "a lot" in practice by the future NFL linebacker Junior Seau helped convince him that acting was a better bet than professional football. He took acting classes while still a student, which is where he met a 19-year-old Denise Richards, and he picked up a two-episode role on the sitcom Who's the Boss? before graduating in 1991. A three-episode arc as Jeffrey Hunter on Saved by the Bell followed.
His breakthrough came in 1992, when he became the first actor to play Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives. The storyline, which placed Austin in a love triangle with Carrie Brady and her sister Sami, made him a daytime heartthrob, and he played the role until 1995. Aaron Spelling then cast him as the villainous Richard Hart on Melrose Place in 1995 and 1996, and during the decade he became the only actor to hold an exclusive development deal with Spelling Entertainment.
In 1997 he played Zander Barcalow, the romantic rival of Casper Van Dien's hero, in Starship Troopers, a film whose cult following kept him busy at fan conventions for the rest of his life. Film work included Wicked (1998), Stigmata (1999), Bad Karma (2001) and Heart of America (2002), and he became a steady presence in television movies for Lifetime, Hallmark and other networks, from Black Cat Run (1998) to A Boyfriend for Christmas (2004) and Christmas in Palm Springs (2014). On stage he played Edmund in Patsy Rodenburg's 2006 production of King Lear. He returned to Days of Our Lives as Austin from September 2011 until 2012.
From 2008 he built a second career as a producer, first as a creative executive at Seven Star Pictures under former Paramount chief Frank Yablans and later at Eclectic Pictures. As head of development at Storyboard Media he worked on The Tribes of Palos Verdes, Arkansas, The Card Counter, Marlowe, The Dreadful and Riff Raff, and he acted in The Comeback Trail (2020) alongside Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman. In total he had nearly 100 acting credits.
Music was his other great love. He was the lead singer of The Sleeping Masses, whose song "The Woman Is the Way" closed the 2009 film Powder Blue, and friends remembered him as the life of every party, usually with a guitar in hand. Late in life he wrote and recorded "Gray Again" with Neil Graham Ives.
He never married and had no children. He dated Denise Richards on and off in the 1990s and the two remained devoted friends; at the time of his death his partner was Miriam Rothbart. To his family he was "Bobo".
On the morning of 19 April 2026, after his morning coffee, he went to take a shower; Rothbart found him unconscious on the bathroom floor. His death certificate gave myocardial infarction as the cause, with pulmonary embolism and a hereditary clotting disorder as underlying causes. He was cremated on 28 April. Two days before he died he had posted his excitement about Kockroach, a Chris Hemsworth crime film he was executive producing, and his final screen role, as Richie Denton in Dirty Hands opposite Denise Richards, was released on 24 April 2026. Friends described him as "endlessly generous, with his poetry, his humor, and his unmistakable presence", a man who "gave unforgettable hugs" and made others "feel safe and seen."
