Pauline Downing was a 62 year old woman from the Kilmore area of Lurgan, County Armagh, who had earlier lived in Derrymore. She was not a public figure in the usual sense: she had not held public office, built a business, or pursued a career that made her a household name. She was known, instead, within her own community, through her family, her friendships, and her involvement in local life around Lurgan and Aghagallon.
She became known to a much wider audience only in the days following her death, when local and regional media reported on the collision that killed her and on the outpouring of tributes that followed. Those tributes, gathered from neighbours, relatives and local groups, described her as a warm and well liked presence, a mother and a friend whose sudden death left the area in shock.
Pauline Downing died on Friday 23 October 2026 after being struck by a car while she was walking along the Lurgan Road in Aghagallon. The collision happened at around 2.50pm and involved a white Audi Q3. She died as a result of her injuries. A 34 year old man, Mark Branagan of Muskett Road, Carryduff, Belfast, was subsequently charged with causing her death by careless driving and appeared before Lisburn Magistrate's Court. The criminal case against him was ongoing at the time of writing, and no findings of fact had yet been made by a court.
In the hours and days after her death, the Aghagallon and wider Lurgan community responded with grief and disbelief. Local media reported that she was a mother of two sons and was married to her husband, Jerome. The Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann Clanbrassil branch in Lurgan, a traditional Irish music and culture organisation, said it was deeply saddened by her passing and noted her family connection to one of its own committee members, reflecting how closely woven she was into the social and cultural life of the area. Neighbours and acquaintances who spoke to reporters described her as a lovely and well regarded woman whose death had left a visible gap in the community.
As of this writing, funeral arrangements had not been confirmed in the reports available, and several personal details, including her full maiden name, her occupation, and the names of her two sons, had not been made public. This page will be updated as more confirmed information becomes available.
