Pierre Tordo was a French football goalkeeper and later a long-serving coach whose name is woven into the history of CS Sedan Ardennes. Born in Nice on 16 December 1939, he left the Riviera for the Ardennes as a young professional, spent most of his playing career between the posts for Sedan, reached a Coupe de France final, and then spent decades coaching in France and Belgium. He died on 2 September 2026 at the age of 86, after a period in hospital. Notices placed him in Bazeilles, the Ardennes commune where he had long lived.
He began in youth football with Cavigal Nice and ASPTT Nice before joining Sedan in 1961. Louis Dugauguez first called him into the first team for a December 1962 derby against Stade de Reims. He became the club's established goalkeeper from 1964, played in the 1963 Coupe Drago final against Sochaux, and lined up for Sedan in the 1965 Coupe de France final at the Parc des Princes, lost to Stade Rennais after a replay. A one-season loan to AS Beziers in 1967-68 interrupted his Sedan years; he returned and stayed through 1973. Across his Sedan spells he played 243 Division 1 matches for the club and was part of the side that won the French Division 2 title in 1972. He ended his playing career as understudy to Rene Charrier.
Coaching followed almost at once. After a season as Sedan manager in 1974-75 he took charge of SO Chatellerault from 1975 to 1980, then returned to Sedan from 1980 to 1987, a stretch that included the club's loss of professional status in 1986 before Michel Le Flochmoan succeeded him. From 1988 he worked in Belgian Luxembourg provincial football with FC Le Lorrain Arlon and later Royale Jeunesse Arlonaise, earning promotions and a lasting reputation among Arlon supporters. He finished his bench career at US Bazeilles from 2000 to 2008, handing over to Cedric Elzeard.
Away from the touchline he remained a Sedan figure: earlier employment at the Laurant brothers' drapery works had tied him to the town as tightly as the green-and-red shirt. L'Ardennais and Belgian coverage of his death stressed both the 243 top-flight appearances and his imprint on Arlon football. Funeral arrangements published in L'Union said a religious service would be held on 7 September 2026 at the church of Saint-Leger in Torcy, with burial at Bazeilles. He was survived by his brother Paul, children including Paola, Valerie, Laetitia, Olivier and Sebastien, and grandchildren; his son Thomas had predeceased him. No detailed medical cause was given beyond the report that he had been hospitalised for some time.
