Lieutenant General Prakash Mani Tripathi, known in Hindi-language reports as Shriprakash Mani Tripathi, was an Indian Army officer and Bharatiya Janata Party politician who represented Deoria in the Lok Sabha and later chaired the parliamentary inquiry into the 2001 stock market scam. He rose to Deputy Chief of the Army Staff and was the first BJP member of parliament from Deoria. He died on Sunday 8 November 2026 at Medanta Hospital, at the age of 91.
Tripathi was born on 30 June 1935. His English Wikipedia page and reports of his death give his birthplace as Deoria, and more specifically Barpar village in the Baitalpur block of Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh, the family's ancestral home. His official biographical sketch for the 11th Lok Sabha recorded Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His father was Dr S.N.M. Tripathi, a scholar who held a Doctor of Letters and the title Vachaspati. Prakash Mani Tripathi took an M.Sc. in defence studies and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in June 1955, serving first in Jammu and Kashmir. In February 1957 he joined 63 Cavalry. He served as a squadron commander in Nagaland from 1964 to 1965 and completed the staff course at Wellington in 1965.
During the 1971 war with Pakistan he fought in the campaign in Bangladesh. He took part in counter-insurgency operations in Mizoram in 1976, later commanded 3 Independent Armoured Brigade as a brigadier in 1982, an armoured division as a major general from 1985 to 1988, and 2 Corps from 1990 to 1992. Between 1988 and 1990 he was Director-General of Combat Vehicles at the Defence Research and Development Organisation. His parliamentary biographical sketch credited him as an architect of the final production of the indigenous Arjun tank, noting that two prototypes were handed over to the Army in two years. He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 1986 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 1992, and served as Deputy Chief of the Army Staff from 1992 until he retired in 1993.
After leaving the Army he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 1996 he won the Deoria Lok Sabha seat, becoming the constituency's first BJP MP, with 227,155 votes against Nand Kishore Singh of the Janata Dal. He sat in the 11th Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998 and returned for the 13th Lok Sabha from 1999 to 2004. In April 2001 the Speaker appointed him chairman of the 30-member Joint Parliamentary Committee set up to inquire into the stock market scam. The committee presented its report to the Lok Sabha on 19 December 2002. In a 2001 interview he noted that he was the first lieutenant general in 50 years to have been elected to the Lok Sabha.
He married Shashi Tripathi on 8 May 1960. They had two sons and one daughter. One son, Shashank Mani Tripathi, was elected BJP MP for Deoria in 2024. The family home was recorded as Tripathi Bhawan in Civil Lines, Gorakhpur.
