He was born in Vilakkudy in Kollam district, Kerala. An exact birth date is not given on Wikipedia or in the Mathrubhumi and Times of India death reports reviewed for this profile; those reports state he died at 63 on 7 September 2026, which only supports an approximate birth year around 1962 or 1963. Before features, Sarath built a documentary and short-film practice. While making the documentary The Painted Epics, he found rare mural paintings associated with Raja Ravi Varma (sources note discovery at Kilimanoor temple on the official profile) that had not been widely shown to the public. Press and Wikipedia describe that find as a landmark in documenting Ravi Varma-related mural heritage and a turning point in his reputation as a documentary maker. In 1996 he received a Junior Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, for mural research. His short Bhumikku Oru Charamagitam / Bhoomikkoru Charamageetham (A Requiem to Earth), based on a poem by O. N. V. Kurup, was praised for eco-feminist aesthetics and docu-fictional style and later won a Kerala State Film Award for Best Short Film. He held a postgraduate degree in English Literature and formal training in film production and journalism. Filmmaking craft was honed as an apprentice with Indian director Shaji N. Karun and Swiss filmmaker Markoos Imhoof. Outside cinema he retired as Deputy Director of Visual Communication in Kerala's Information and Public Relations Department. Earlier he served as Director of MPCC (Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan) and Secretary of Bharat Bhavan under the state Culture department. He was visual director for Geet Govinda, described as India's early prestigious multimedia collaboration between the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi, and Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, with a script by Kapila Vatsyayan in 1997. He was festival director of IUKFF 2007 in London, a National Film Award jury member in 2011, and chair of the Kerala State Television Award jury in 2012.
Feature debut Sayahnam (Twilight, 2000) centred on environmental and anti-nuclear themes and conflict between moral orders. It won the Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director, the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam, Kerala State Best Film and Best Story, and was widely reported as taking seven Kerala State Film Awards; it screened in competition at Munich 2001 and other festivals. Sthithi (Plight, 2002), with playback singer Unni Menon in the lead, followed a Secretariat couple and won Kerala State Second Best Film. Seelabathi (2005), with Kavya Madhavan and Narain, set rural Kerala stories of missing girls and resource exploitation against each other; Sarath told The Hindu the film was for all those girls who have been reported missing from several parts of the State.
The Desire: A Journey of a Woman (Indo-Chinese co-production, festival circuit around 2011), starring Shilpa Shetty and Xia Yu, won Best Narrative Feature at the Geneva International Film Festival and further festival prizes listed by Wikipedia and his site. Parudeesa (Paradise, 2012), written by Vinu Abraham and starring Sreenivasan, Thampy Antony, and Swetha Menon, explored orthodox versus progressive Christian belief and drew clergy-related controversy even as Sarath insisted it glorified Christ and attacked superstition and theocracy. Later features include Buddhanum Chaplinum Chirikkunnu (Chaplin homage; listed 2014 on his site / Wikipedia year cell; theatrical reports also cite 2016), Swayam (2017; autism and a mother's resolve; Times of India called Swayam: Selfless his last directorial venture, while Wikipedia and the official site also list later titles), Mahatma Gandhi Road (2020 documentary on khadi and self-reliance), and Burial of Dreams (2024; trailer featured on the official homepage). R. Sarath died on 7 September 2026 at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, aged 63. Mathrubhumi and the Times of India reported the death; neither published a cause. Family details and resting place were not made public in those English reports.
