Raja Sen was a Bengali film, television and documentary director from Kolkata who won three National Film Awards over a career of more than three decades. He was best known for his debut feature Damu (1996), a children's film that won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film, and for literary adaptations for Bengali television such as Subarnalata.
Sen first made his name with documentaries about the figures of Bengal's art and cultural world. His film on the singer Suchitra Mitra won the National Film Award for Best Arts/Cultural Film in 1993, and he went on to make documentaries on the director Tapan Sinha, the theatre pioneer Sombhu Mitra, the poet Subhas Mukhopadhyay, the writer Jyotirmoyee Devi and the folk form Alkaap, as well as a five part series on the heritage of Kolkata.
Damu, starring Raghuvir Yadav, brought him wider recognition, also winning the Shiromoni Award for best film and an audience award at the Dhaka International Film Festival. His family drama Atmiyo Swajan (1999), with Soumitra Chatterjee and Supriya Devi, won the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare and was shown at the Cairo International Film Festival. His later features included Chakrabyuhya, Desh (2002) with Jaya Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, Debipaksha, Krishnakanter Will, Tinmurti, Laboratory, which marked Raveena Tandon's Bengali debut, Colonel and Maya Mridanga (2016).
On television he became known for the teleserial Subarnalata (1997), adapted from Ashapurna Devi's novel, and followed it with Adarsha Hindu Hotel, Arogya Niketan, Kolkata Kolkata and episodes of Desh Amaar Desh. He was married to the actress Papiya Sen, and they had two daughters.
In the summer of 2026 Sen was admitted to a private hospital after an injury to his lower back. His condition worsened and he developed lung and heart complications, and he was moved to the state run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where he later developed kidney complications and was placed on ventilator support. He died there on Sunday 16 August 2026. News agencies reported his age as 71. His death was mourned across the Bengali film and television industry, where his work had spanned cinema, television serials and documentaries for more than thirty years.
