Ram Govind Chaudhary

Ram Govind Chaudhary was an Indian socialist politician from Uttar Pradesh who spent nearly five decades in the state legislature and became one of the most recognisable faces of the Samajwadi Party. He served as Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022, and represented the Bansdih assembly seat in his home district of Ballia. In earlier decades he had also represented the Chilkahar constituency, also in Ballia, holding a seat in the state assembly across eight terms in total.

Chaudhary was born on 9 July 1953 in Gosaipur, Ballia, the son of Dwarika Chaudhary. He trained as a lawyer, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Gorakhpur University in 1974 and an LLB from Lucknow University in 1982. He came into politics through the socialist movement of the 1970s, working alongside Jayaprakash Narayan and Chandra Shekhar, and later became a close associate of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. That grounding in socialist politics shaped his decades in the assembly and his reputation as a grassroots leader from eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Over his long career he held ministerial charge of Horticulture and Food Processing under Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1990 to 1991, and later of Child Development and Nutrition and Basic Education, first under Mulayam Singh Yadav (2003 to 2007) and then under Akhilesh Yadav (2012 to 2017). His time overseeing basic education and child nutrition placed him at the centre of some of the state's largest welfare programmes. As Leader of the Opposition from March 2017 to March 2022, he was the Samajwadi Party's chief voice against the Yogi Adityanath government in the assembly for a full five year term, a role that made him one of the most prominent opposition figures in the state during that period.

Ram Govind Chaudhary died on the night of 25 September 2026 at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow, where he had been under treatment in the postoperative intensive care unit. He was 73. SGPGI director Dr R. K. Dhiman confirmed his death, and the news was carried the same night by wire agencies and regional media across Uttar Pradesh. Contemporary reports described age related ailments; a detailed medical cause was not made public in the first accounts.

News of his death brought an outpouring of condolence from across Uttar Pradesh's political spectrum. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav described it as a major loss for the party and the socialist movement. Tributes noted Chaudhary's long association with Mulayam Singh Yadav, his place in the JP and Lohia traditions, and his decades representing Ballia. He is survived by his wife, Kalawati Devi, and their son.
