Just read a piece on Mitterrand's Nièvre years and there's Signé's name again, the doctor who took over Château-Chinon. Ninety six. Forty years in that one small corner of France, that's rare now.

René-Pierre Signé was a French Socialist politician and general practitioner who spent four decades at the heart of public life in the Nièvre. A companion of François Mitterrand, he succeeded him as mayor of Château-Chinon in 1981 and represented the department in the French Senate for almost twenty-five years. He died on Monday, October 12, 2026, at the age of 96.
Born on September 16, 1930, Signé trained as a doctor and practised as a general practitioner in the Morvan, the wooded upland of Burgundy where Mitterrand had built his own political base. Medicine shaped his public life. Patrice Joly, a senator for the Nièvre, said after his death that "it was medicine that carried him," and Fabien Bazin, president of the departmental council, said he "sincerely loved people" and shared the daily lives, difficulties and hopes of the people of the Morvan.
His elected career began in 1970, when he became conseiller général for the canton of Château-Chinon, a seat he held for thirty-one years until 2001. In May 1981, when Mitterrand was elected President of the Republic and left the town hall of Château-Chinon, Signé took over as mayor. He led the small capital of the Morvan for twenty-seven years, until 2008.
On December 18, 1986, he entered the Senate following the death of Noël Berrier. He was re-elected in 1992 and again in 2001, sat with the Socialist group, and at the end of his last term was a member of the cultural affairs committee. He chose not to stand again in the 2011 senatorial elections, and his mandate ended on September 30, 2011.
Close to the land he served, Signé also presided over the Parc naturel régional du Morvan from 1994 to 2001, the communauté de communes du Haut Morvan from 1995 to 2008, and the union amicale des maires de la Nièvre until 2011. In the early 2000s he was behind an experiment that brought the social and health services of the State and the department together under one roof at a Maison de la Solidarité in Château-Chinon, an initiative that drew a visit from the social affairs minister of the time.
Until the end of his life he presided over the association François-Mitterrand, which each year commemorates in Château-Chinon the victory of May 10, 1981. Joly called him "the guardian of the memory" of Mitterrand. He was an officer of the Légion d'honneur and a knight of the Ordre national du Mérite.
He was survived by his wife, Denise, his children Bertrand and Hervé and their wives, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. His funeral was set for Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the church of Château-Chinon. Paying tribute, Bazin said the Nièvre had lost "a great figure" whose commitment had left a lasting mark on the public life of the department.

In their own words
“La Nièvre perd aujourd'hui une grande figure, un élu affectivement attaché au territoire morvandiau. (The Nièvre today loses a great figure, an elected official deeply attached to the Morvan.)”
Fabien Bazin, president of the Nièvre departmental council, tribute in Le Journal du Centre, October 2026

True, hard to imagine a politician staying put that long these days.
