My mother called from Oregon with this, of all the names to come up on a Tuesday afternoon call about nothing. I only knew him from reading around Awolowo's old Action Group, one name in a lot of footnotes. A hundred years old and still the one everyone called the elder. Rare to get that far and still be the steady one.

Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, known across south west Nigeria as Pa Fasoranti, was a teacher, school founder and elder statesman who led Afenifere, the pan Yoruba socio political organisation, and served as Ondo State's commissioner for finance in the Unity Party of Nigeria government of Chief Adekunle Ajasin. He died at the age of 100, five months after a centenary celebration in Akure attended by the vice president on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
He was born on 11 May 1926 in Uso, in what is now Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. After a village school in Uso and schooling in Owo, he attended Ondo Boys' High School, Yaba Higher College in Lagos and University College, Ibadan, where he studied English and geography. He later took a postgraduate diploma in education at the University of Hull in England and a master's degree in educational administration at Macquarie University in Sydney.
Fasoranti began teaching at his old school, Ondo Boys' High School, and was the founding principal of Iju-Itaogbolu Grammar School, where he worked for 14 years. He also led Baptist schools in Iwo and Oyo and finished as principal of Christ's School, Ado Ekiti. After retiring he went straight back to education, founding Omolere Nursery and Primary School and Akure High School in Akure, and later St Frances' Academy, Igoba, in memory of his late wife.
A follower of Chief Obafemi Awolowo from the Action Group years, he was among the movers of the Unity Party of Nigeria in Ondo State, and from 1979 to 1983 he was commissioner for finance under Governor Ajasin, a tenure later praised for prudent management of the state's money. In the 1990s he stood with Afenifere and the pro democracy coalition against military rule. He succeeded Abraham Adesanya as leader of Afenifere in 2008. In 2015 he announced he was stepping aside, citing his age and divisions in the group, yet he remained its revered figurehead and was still described as national leader at his death.
In July 2019 his daughter, Olufunke Olakunrin, was shot dead by gunmen on the Ore road while travelling from Akure to Lagos. The killing caused national outrage, and in 2022 an Ondo State High Court sentenced three men to death for her murder.
His death was announced on 20 October 2026 by the governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who called him a patriarch and a beacon of wisdom, integrity and selfless service whose century long life was marked by commitment to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.
