Richard Harrison

Richard Harrison died of natural causes in Los Angeles on 18 September 2026, aged 90. Producer and longtime friend Joan Borsten reported the death. News coverage followed on 23 September 2026 in The Hollywood Reporter, ExtraTV and other outlets. He was survived by his wife Francesca and by three of his four children. One child had predeceased him. Family and friends asked that his long career be remembered alongside his private life as a host, traveler and father.

Richard Harrison was born on 26 May 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a teenager he left for Los Angeles, arriving at seventeen and finding work at fitness gyms run by Vic Tanny and Bert Goodrich. The gyms drew clients from the film world, and those contacts steered him toward modeling and acting.

In the 1950s he posed for physique photographers, including work associated with Bob Mizer's Athletic Model Guild, in an era when male physique magazines occupied a narrow legal and cultural space. ExtraTV later reported that he sold prints to a private mailing list of admirers. The modeling work helped pay the bills while he pursued stage and screen opportunities in Southern California.

Harrison studied acting at Twentieth Century Fox under coach Sandy Meisner. He appeared in Santa Monica stage work and early television before landing uncredited or small feature roles. Formal training distinguished him from many other American bodybuilder-actors who later competed for peplum leads in Italy. Colleagues and later interviewers often noted that he brought more craft preparation to roles that studios treated as muscle showcase parts.

Harrison's Hollywood years yielded supporting appearances in Jeanne Eagels, South Pacific, Too Much, Too Soon, Tall Story and Master of the World. After signing with American International Pictures he relocated to Italy under producer Italo Zingarelli and became a star of sword-and-sandal cinema with The Invincible Gladiator (1962).

Through the 1960s he headlined peplum follow-ups, Eurospy films such as Secret Agent Fireball, and spaghetti Westerns including Gunfight at Red Sands. He declined Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars and recommended Clint Eastwood. In the 1970s he directed Two Brothers in Trinity, worked for Shaw Brothers in Hong Kong, and took international assignments from Egypt to Yugoslavia. The 1980s brought Philippine Z-movies and Hong Kong ninja titles, some later expanded without his consent through cut-and-paste editing. He returned to the United States, appeared in Lies of the Twins (1991), and wound down feature work by around 2000 before focusing on business with his son Sebastian.

In 1961 Harrison married Loretta Nicholson, daughter of AIP executive James H. Nicholson; they later divorced. In 1978 he married Maria Francesca Pomentale, also known as Francesca and as actress Daria Norman. They had a daughter together; Harrison had three sons from his first marriage, including actor Sebastian Harrison. Friends described a household that valued travel, languages, reading and animals, especially cats.

The couple's Malibu home, Villa Francesca, hosted long dinner parties that often ended with pasta at midnight. Guests recalled in obituaries included Steve Reeves, George Cukor, Franco Nero, Gore Vidal, Tab Hunter and others. In January 2025 the estate was destroyed in the Palisades Fire; Sebastian evacuated his father. Joan Borsten said Harrison treated unexpected European fame as a chance to see the world rather than as a pedestal.

Harrison often said he chose film offers by asking where they would shoot, accepting jobs that took him somewhere new and reading the script on the plane. That travel-first approach helped explain a filmography that spanned Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Egypt, Turkey and Yugoslavia.

He also showed a practical sense of loyalty and rescue. In 1985, during the Cold War, he helped Soviet actor Oleg Vidov defect at the U.S. embassy in Rome, an episode later recounted by producer Joan Borsten. In interviews about the ninja years he spoke bluntly about producers who reused his footage without permission, making clear that he valued consent and credit even inside the lowest-budget corners of genre filmmaking.

Harrison is remembered as a bridge figure between Hollywood bit parts and the global B-movie circuit: a Meisner-trained American who became a household face in Italy while remaining little known in the United States. Genre historians credit him with one of the longest careers among American expatriates in European popular cinema, and with an early spaghetti Western footprint that included Gunfight at Red Sands and the box-office hit $100,000 for Ringo.

His joke about recommending Eastwood for A Fistful of Dollars became a staple of spaghetti Western lore. Decades later, the same ninja films that embarrassed him in the 1980s acquired cult followings among fans of so-bad-they-are-fascinating cinema, keeping his image circulating on home video and the internet long after he left the business.

Harrison did not accumulate major Hollywood awards, and much of his peak fame was overseas. Recognition instead took the form of enduring fan scholarship: entries in the Spaghetti Western Database, retrospective interviews such as Nanarland's long English-language conversation, convention Q&A appearances, and continued circulation of titles like The Invincible Gladiator, Gunfight at Red Sands, Secret Agent Fireball, Beast with a Gun and Ninja Terminator. An authorized memoir idea titled My A Life in B Movies was discussed but not completed.

Obituaries in The Hollywood Reporter and ExtraTV in September 2026 framed Harrison as a Salt Lake City native who found A-list treatment in B-movie Europe. Fan sites and podcasts had already preserved his reminiscences about Leone, Eastwood, Italian Westerns and the Hong Kong ninja boom. Clips from interviews and film excerpts remain widely available on YouTube, introducing new viewers to both his peplum leading-man years and his later cult oddities.

The most discussed controversy of Harrison's career concerned the Hong Kong ninja films of the 1980s. After agreeing to a limited number of projects, he discovered that editors had spliced his scenes into many additional features, billing him as the star of movies he had not knowingly made. He described the practice as a reason he left Asia and returned to the United States.

Separately, on Beast with a Gun (1977), reports circulated that his scenes were reduced at the request of top-billed co-star Helmut Berger. Philippine Silver Star productions he appeared in were often shot without complete scripts, with dialogue improvised on set, which contributed both to their chaotic reputation and to later cult interest.
