Roberta Kirk Francisco, known to family and friends as Robbie, died on October 8, 2026, in Salem, Virginia, at the age of 87. She had spent most of her life in the Roanoke Valley and was remembered in the days following her death as a devoted nurse, a steadfast churchgoer, and the anchor of a large extended family.
She was born on May 29, 1939, in Giles County, Virginia, the daughter of Arnold K. Kirk and Edith Caldwell Kirk. She grew up as one of several siblings in a close-knit rural family and later settled in Salem, where she would live for most of her adult life. Faith was a constant thread through her life: she was a lifelong member of Fort Lewis Christian Church, a congregation that remained central to her social and spiritual world for decades.
Professionally, Roberta Kirk Francisco built her working life around nursing. According to her obituary published by the Roanoke Times, she was "an exceptional nurse who loved every day of her job until her retirement." While she was not a public figure in the national sense, within her own community she was known for the kind of quiet, sustained service that nursing requires, caring for patients over a long career before stepping back into retirement, where she devoted herself fully to her family, church, and home life.
Outside of work, those who knew her described a woman of warmth and energy. She loved her dogs, music, gardening, and baking, and family members and friends recalled her sharp wit and her habit of looking after the people around her. She was married to Clay B. Francisco Sr., who predeceased her, and she helped raise a blended family that grew, over the decades, into a large network of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who remained close to her throughout her life.
Francisco's death on October 8, 2026, was announced through an obituary placed by her family with the Roanoke Times and Lotz Funeral Home and Crematory in Salem. As of this writing, no cause of death has been made public. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, and four sisters, and is survived by her children, nine grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, who described her as someone whose presence will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.
Her family has arranged a visitation and memorial service, due to be held on October 24, 2026, at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem, Virginia, where loved ones will gather to honor a life built around care for others, both professionally as a nurse and personally as a mother, grandmother, and friend.
