"Attitude is everything." She said that while she was learning to walk again. 34 is nothing.

Sahara Ray was an Australian model, swimwear designer and social media personality whose sun-soaked images of surf, sand and design helped define a decade of Instagram style. The daughter of Australian big-wave surfer Tony Ray, she grew up between the coast of Victoria, California and the North Shore of Hawaii, turned a childhood spent around professional surfing into a career in fashion, and founded her own label, Sahara Ray Swim, in 2014. She died on Sunday, October 18, 2026, in hospital, surrounded by her family. She was 34, and her daughter, Snow, was not yet nine months old.
Ray was born in Torquay, Victoria, the surf town on Australia's southern coast that is home to Bells Beach. Her father, Tony Ray, was one of the first Australian professionals to make a full-time living from surfing, competing in the Pipe Masters and in big-wave events. Her parents met while he was competing at the Cold Water Classic in Santa Cruz, and Sahara held dual citizenship, which allowed her to be raised largely in Santa Cruz, California. Every winter she spent about three months on the North Shore of Oahu with her father, travelling the world with him while he competed. She described him as "the most loving, kind human in the world" who could "still charge Mavericks and Jaws when it's 30-plus feet."
She surfed and competed as a girl, but around the age of 16 she set aside plans to follow her father onto the professional tour and chose fashion instead. After high school she moved to Los Angeles, where she took classes at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) and pursued her interests in clothes, design and photography. She was signed to One Management and began modelling while building an audience on Instagram, where her following passed one million by 2016 and stood at about 947,000 in 2024.
In July 2014, while based in Long Beach, California, she launched her debut Spring/Summer 2014 swimwear collection with a lookbook featuring herself and model Mimi Elashiry. The brand, Sahara Ray Swim, became the centre of her working life; she modelled its pieces herself and described herself as a workaholic. She also worked with fashion brands, fronting a festival-season campaign for the handbag label Botkier ahead of Coachella in 2015 and appearing that summer as one of Charlotte Russe's "It Girls" alongside Olivia Culpo, Jasmine Sanders, Jennifer Humphrey and Tara Lynn.
Her personal life drew heavy tabloid attention. In 2015 she was linked to Australian singer Cody Simpson, and in August 2016 photographs of her on holiday in Hawaii with Justin Bieber made her internationally famous almost overnight. She never confirmed either relationship. She was later photographed with Miles Richie in December 2016, and in 2023 and 2024 she was in a relationship with musician Mod Sun (Derek Ryan Smith), with whom she made her last known public appearance, at the Ashton Michael 10-year anniversary show in Los Angeles in November 2023.
On April 8, 2024, Ray said, she was hit by a car driven by a drunk driver travelling at about 80 miles an hour. Weeks of severe illness followed, then numbness and tingling that spread up her legs. In May 2024 she told followers she had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the nerves, and that she was paralysed from the upper thighs down and relying on a wheelchair and a walker. "My whole life changed in an instant," she wrote, while sharing videos of her rehabilitation and insisting that "attitude is everything." She later appeared to regain her ability to walk.
In April 2025, Ray posted a series of allegations of abuse against her then fiance, Mike Dow, which she retracted days later. She said she had been experiencing a mental health episode that "warped my perception of reality," that she had been hospitalised, and that none of what she had posted had happened. She apologised to Dow and thanked her family and friends for their support while she focused on her recovery.
In August 2025 she announced that she was expecting a girl, and on January 27, 2026, she gave birth to her daughter, Snow Ray. "I can't believe I made this little miracle with my body," she wrote. She spent the following months sharing motherhood with her followers; her final Instagram post, in July 2026, was a set of photographs of her baby captioned "My whole heart, baby Snow."
Her family announced her death to TMZ on October 19, 2026: "She passed away last night surrounded by family at the hospital. She was so loved." No cause of death has been made public, and there is no confirmed link to the illness she had described in 2024. Friends including models Sabrina Zada and Becky Hearn posted tributes, and fans who had followed her since the early days of Instagram remembered her as a defining figure of that era. She is survived by her daughter, Snow, and by her father, Tony Ray.
