I read that he said 'I love beauty, it's not my fault.' There's something honest in that. He wasn't apologizing for wanting lovely things. The world needed more of that.

The Onassis wedding dress. The red that made everyone else's red look like a mistake. Valentino understood that glamour isn't frivolous, it's a kind of courage.

Voghera beginnings

Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani was born on 11 May 1932 in Voghera to Mauro Garavani and Teresa. Sister Wanda was about seven years older. Relative affluence, an aunt Rosa who introduced him to dressmaking, and a childhood named for Rudolph Valentino steered him toward fashion and drawing before formal study.

Milan sketches, Paris ateliers

In 1949 he studied fashion sketching at Milan's Santa Maria Institute, then trained in Paris at the Beaux-Arts and Chambre Syndicale schools. He won an International Wool Secretariat prize, apprenticed with Jean Dessès, and later worked with Guy Laroche. He returned to Italy at the end of the 1950s ready to open his own house.

Rome maison to global Valentino

In 1959 he opened a salon on Via Condotti and showed the Fiesta red dress. In 1960 he formed a partnership with Giancarlo Giammetti. Florence followed in 1962. Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor became early myth-makers. The 1967-1968 white collections and V logo, the Neiman Marcus Award, and the 1968 Onassis wedding dress marked the late 1960s. Ready-to-wear and international…

Rosso Valentino and the jet-set client

His signature discovery was a precise red (carmine, scarlet, a hint of orange) and a feminine high-glamour vocabulary of bows, lace, and embroidery that made republican-age royalty and Hollywood feel interchangeable. Jackie Kennedy's patronage and the Onassis wedding dress turned couture clients into public legend.

Partners, homes, no heirs

He never married and had no children. His defining partnership was with Giancarlo Giammetti (romantic relationship from about 1960 to 1972, then a lifelong business and emotional bond). From the early 1980s his long-term partner was Vernon Bruce Hoeksema. They shared homes across Rome, Wideville, New York, London, Gstaad, and Capri, and were famous for their pugs. Biographical coverage also…

Beauty first

He insisted women want to be beautiful and that his job was to make them look sensational. Signature lines include "I love beauty, it's not my fault" and "I know what women want. They want to be beautiful." He rejected grunge and anti-glamour as a career philosophy and stayed loyal to craft, femininity, and spectacle.

The last emperor of couture glamour

His legacy includes rosso Valentino as a cultural color, Italian haute couture's standing on the Paris stage, the Jackie, Diana, and Oscar red-carpet archive, the Last Emperor documentary myth, the Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti, and a house that outlived his pencil. Giorgia Meloni and industry tributes framed him as a permanent symbol of Italian style.

State and fashion honours

Selected honours: Neiman Marcus Award (late 1960s); Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Grand Officer, then Knight Grand Cross, mid-1980s); Knight of the Order of Merit for Labour (1996); French Legion of Honour (Knight, 2006); Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (France, 2012); Medal of the City of Paris; FIT Couture Council recognition; Golden Plate; British Fashion…

Documented friction, lightly

Wikipedia and secondary reporting note Panama Papers-related offshore entity coverage. In 2007, retirement talks with Permira included public contract and timing friction reported by WWD and the New York Times. Those points are documented and limited; they are not a full portrait.

Rome farewell, January 2026

He died on 19 January 2026 at home in Rome, aged 93. The Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti said he passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, and did not publish a clinical cause. Lying in state was held on 21-22 January 2026 at Piazza Mignanelli 23. The funeral was on 23 January 2026 at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs. He rests at Flaminio Cemetery, Prima Porta; BBC noted cremation with ashes interred there, and Wikipedia describes a shared Garavani-Giammetti family chapel. Tributes came from Giorgia Meloni, Donatella Versace, Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, Anne Hathaway, and many clients.
