I only found out about him because my neighbor, who is Hungarian, had a stack of old Kiskegyed magazines her mother sent over years ago, and she used to translate little bits for me over coffee. I never read Hungarian myself so I only know him secondhand, through her and through what I've read since. She called me this morning to tell me he'd died, she was quite upset actually, more than I expected, and she kept saying he wrote about marriage in a way nobody else dared to back then. I looked up a little about Dunaujvaros after that, the town he wrote about his whole life, and it struck me how someone can spend decades documenting one place and make it matter to people who will never go there. Anyway. 88 years old. I don't know enough to say more than that but it felt wrong to say nothing.

I don't really know what to say, I'd never heard the name Giorgos Vardinogiannis until today but ninety years on this earth, built around ships and a football club he loved, that's a whole life well spent. Rest now, Captain.

I saw this on the local news Friday night and just sat there. A man waiting for his own children off the school bus. My nephew was taken the same way years back, a gunshot, and it never stops being this sudden. Praying for those babies who have to grow up now without their father waiting at that spot.

A clip of the Maniyaro song turned up on my feed last week, people doing garba to it, and now I'm reading the man behind it died at 87. I called my mother and she said her mother used to play his father's records, and that Gaurang kept it going. I'd never heard the name before this but the tune stayed with me all afternoon.

My cousin in Milan used to send me links to liberoquotidiano.it every morning, said the young digital editor there wrote like he actually cared about getting it right. I never learned enough Italian to follow all of it, but I listened to a few episodes of his sports podcast with her translating over the phone, laughing the whole time. Forty years old. Lord rest him, and comfort that family.

My mother called me at six in the morning my time to tell me Dottie Martin had died. I thought of those wildflowers along the highways, how she said they touched your life for a moment even if you never knew her name. That's a kind of grace.
