Robert Selden Duvall was born on 5 January 1931 in San Diego, California, to Mildred Virginia Hart, an amateur actress, and Rear Admiral William Howard Duvall of the United States Navy. The second of three sons, he grew up with older brother William Jr. and younger brother John (later an entertainment lawyer). A Navy family childhood took him especially to Annapolis, Maryland. He attended Severn School in Severna Park and The Principia in St. Louis, then earned a Bachelor of Arts in drama from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, in 1953. His father had expected the Naval Academy; Duvall later joked he was terrible at everything but acting. After college he served in the U.S. Army from 19 August 1953 to 20 August 1954, leaving as a private first class, and later corrected press myths that cast him as a Korean War combat hero.
On the G.I. Bill he studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York under Sanford Meisner. Classmates included Gene Hackman and James Caan; he roomed with Dustin Hoffman and stayed close to Hoffman and Hackman for life. He began professionally at the Gateway Playhouse on Long Island in 1952, returned after Army service, and built stage credits that included an Obie-winning revival of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge and a 1966 Broadway debut in Wait Until Dark. Television guest work in the 1960s (Naked City, The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, and many others) led to his feature debut as the silent Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), cast on screenwriter Horton Foote's recommendation.
The 1970s made him indispensable. He played Major Frank Burns in M*A*S*H (1970), then Tom Hagen in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), earning an Oscar nomination for the first film. Coppola kept casting him (The Conversation, Apocalypse Now). As Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979) he delivered the immortal line about loving the smell of napalm in the morning, won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe, and took another Oscar nomination. The same year The Great Santini brought a Best Actor nomination. Vincent Canby of The New York Times dubbed him "the American Olivier," a label that stuck. He also returned to Broadway in David Mamet's American Buffalo (1977).
In 1983 he won the Academy Award for Best Actor as washed-up country singer Mac Sledge in Horton Foote's Tender Mercies, insisting in his contract that he sing the songs himself. 1989's CBS miniseries Lonesome Dove gave him Captain Augustus "Gus" McCrae, the role he often called his personal favorite, with a Golden Globe win and an Emmy nomination. He declined The Godfather Part III when the salary gap with Al Pacino felt wrong, telling 60 Minutes he would accept twice Pacino's pay but not three or four times. He founded Butcher's Run Films, wrote and directed The Apostle (1997), earning another Best Actor nomination, and continued a restless film and television career through A Civil Action, Broken Trail (Emmy wins), The Judge (Oscar-nominated at 84), Widows, and final 2022 roles in Hustle and The Pale Blue Eye.
He married four times and had no children: Barbara Benjamin (1964-1975), Gail Youngs (1982-1986), Sharon Brophy (1991-1995), and Luciana Pedraza (married 2005; together since the late 1990s after meeting in Argentina when a closed flower shop sent him into a bakery). With Pedraza he danced tango, made Assassination Tango, and founded the Robert Duvall Children's Fund for families in northern Argentina. Political coverage described him as libertarian or conservative; he endorsed Republican candidates including Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Mitt Romney, and later said the party was "a mess" and he was considering independence. He received the National Medal of Arts from President George W. Bush in 2005.
Duvall died on Sunday 15 February 2026 at his farm in Middleburg, Virginia, aged 95. On 16 February his wife Luciana posted on his official Facebook page that he had passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort. She called him simply everything: Academy Award-winning actor, director, storyteller. A specific medical cause of death was not made public. The family asked for privacy and, per reporting, encouraged fans to honor him by watching a great film, telling a story with friends, or taking a drive in the countryside rather than staging a formal public service. Tributes arrived from Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola, Viola Davis, Adam Sandler, Michael Keaton, Jamie Lee Curtis, SAG-AFTRA, and many others who called him a giant of American screen acting.
