My father trained as a dental technician back in the 70s and kept every clipping he could find about Dr Nero's work, said it gave him something to aim for. I remember him reading one out at the kitchen table in Cork, going on about how far this man had come in a field that wasn't exactly welcoming. 89 years old. That's a long road.

Mam rang me about this one, not the other way round, said she'd seen a clip of 30 Years of Bananas shared online and it brought her right back. I'd never heard of him before today but she was genuinely shaken by it.

My mother rang me in Lisbon just to tell me, she'd read it in the Free Press online somehow, said Gimli won't be the same. I never read him properly, only The Imagined City years ago on a flight, but she talked about New Iceland like it was her own place. 86. Sorry, Mam.

My dad rang me just to say it, he remembered listening to that Gent cup win as a boy somehow though he's never even been to Belgium. Saw a clip going round of Storme saying life is a feast, lovely way to think of it. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Saw him in Cork at the Gate Theatre when I was young, studying his face. That same face, older, still utterly present in every frame. A true craftsman.

My father had a book of OMA drawings from the 1970s on the shelf for decades. When I finally looked through it properly last year, I understood why he kept coming back to it. Such a loss.
