Trinath Mishra was an Indian Police Service officer of the 1965 batch, Uttar Pradesh cadre, who over a career of nearly 37 years led several of the institutions at the heart of India's internal security. He headed the Special Protection Group, which guards the prime minister, served as director of the national police academy, ran the Central Bureau of Investigation in 1998 and was Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force from 2000 to 2002.

He came from Ghaghmunda village in Kurdeg, in what is now Simdega district of Jharkhand, and was among the first students of the Netarhat Residential School. He took a bachelor's degree at Patna University and later earned an MA and a PhD from Rohilkhand University, which is why colleagues and the press knew him as Dr. Trinath Mishra.

As a young officer in Uttar Pradesh he served in some of the state's most difficult districts, including spells as Senior Superintendent of Police in Varanasi and Meerut, and was part of the effort against dacoity in the state. He also worked on security planning for the Kumbh Mela at Allahabad and served as Director General of Police in Manipur. In the early 1990s he was Director of the Special Protection Group, and from 1996 to 1997 he was Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

He then became Special Director of the CBI and took charge of the agency on an ad hoc basis from 1 April 1998, after D. R. Karthikeyan retired. His tenure was brief. An Indian Express tribute recalled that in October 1998 he authorised searches at the premises of the country's most powerful corporate house and was moved within weeks, for not keeping the political executive informed rather than for any impropriety. The episode was later cited in arguments for a fixed tenure for CBI directors. He went on to lead the CRPF from 31 July 2000 to 31 December 2002, holding additional charge of the Central Industrial Security Force. His honours included the President's Police Medal, the Police Medal for Gallantry and the Govind Ballabh Pant Award, and he wrote First Charge: Handbook for Police Officers.

Mishra died at his home in New Delhi at about 5 a.m. on 1 October 2026, aged 84. The CRPF said he had departed for his heavenly abode that morning and held a condolence meeting at its headquarters, and the national police academy, the CISF and the IPS (Central) Association issued tributes. News of his death was mourned in his home village in Simdega.

84 years old. That's a proper life, nearly 37 years of it in service. Thinking of his family this morning, didn't know much about him before today but that CBI story in 1998 stayed with me all afternoon.

His abrupt removal from the CBI in 1998 became, in the words of the Indian Express, a case study in the vulnerability of honest institutions, and was later cited in court and government debates over giving the CBI director protected tenure. For many officers he remained an example of policing with integrity.
