Freddie Jackson was an American R&B singer whose smooth, romantic ballads made him one of the defining voices of 1980s soul. Hits such as "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)", "You Are My Lady" and "Have You Ever Loved Somebody" became fixtures of quiet storm radio and remained staples of slow dance playlists for decades.

Born Frederick Anthony Jackson in Harlem, New York City, on 2 October 1956, he was trained as a gospel singer at the White Rock Baptist Church, where he met Paul Laurence, later his producer and songwriting partner. He sang on the New York club scene with Laurence's group LJE, fronted the California funk band Mystic Merlin in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and sang backing vocals for Melba Moore before Capitol Records signed him in 1984.

His 1985 debut album, Rock Me Tonight, was an immediate success. The title track spent six weeks at number one on the R&B chart, "You Are My Lady" followed it to the top and reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album went platinum. Just Like the First Time (1986) produced three more R&B number ones, and he added further chart toppers with "A Little Bit More" (with Melba Moore), "Hey Lover", "Nice 'N' Slow", "Do Me Again" and "Love Me Down". He was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1985 and won an American Music Award in 1988.

Jackson also sang "Love Survives" with Irene Cara for the 1989 animated film All Dogs Go to Heaven, appeared as a lounge singer in The Golden Girls and had a role in the film King of New York. After leaving Capitol in 1993 he recorded for RCA and a series of independent labels, releasing albums into the 2010s and touring with contemporaries including Jeffrey Osborne, Peabo Bryson and Stephanie Mills.

In September 2024 Jackson revealed that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease and partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness. He died on the night of 5 October 2026, three days after his 70th birthday. His family announced the death the next day on his social media accounts and did not give a cause.

Rock Me Tonight was playing on my sister's record player the summer she got married, 1985, and every slow dance at that reception was Freddie Jackson. I'm 75 now and I still hear You Are My Lady and I'm right back in her kitchen in Springfield. Rest well, Freddie.

Capitol Records signed him in 1984. His debut album, Rock Me Tonight (1985), topped the R&B album chart and went platinum. The Laurence-written title track spent six weeks at number one on the R&B singles chart, and "You Are My Lady" also reached number one on that chart and number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, his highest pop placing.

The follow-up, Just Like the First Time (1986), was another platinum seller, with "Tasty Love", "Have You Ever Loved Somebody" and "Jam Tonight" all reaching number one R&B. His duet with Melba Moore, "A Little Bit More", also topped the R&B chart. Don't Let Love Slip Away (1988) brought two more number ones in "Hey Lover" and "Nice 'N' Slow", and Do Me Again (1990) added the title track and "Love Me Down".

In 1989 he appeared as a lounge singer in the Golden Girls episode "Two Rode Together" and recorded "Love Survives" with Irene Cara for the soundtrack of All Dogs Go to Heaven. He also appeared in the 1990 film King of New York.

Jackson left Capitol/EMI in late 1993 and released Here It Is (1994) and a Christmas album on RCA, then Private Party (1995) for Scotti Brothers. Later albums included Life After 30 (1999), It's Your Move (2004), Transitions (2006), For You (2010) and Love Signals (2018). He continued to tour, headlining festivals including Detroit's African World Festival in 2019.
