Troy Hendrix was a 30 year old father in Saline County, Arkansas, who was shot and killed on October 9, 2026, while he waited by the side of the road for his children to be dropped off by the school bus. He was not a public figure before his death, and he became known to the wider public only through the news coverage of the shooting that took his life. Little has been reported about his work, his background, or his life before that Friday afternoon, beyond the fact that at least one report described him as having recently married.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the 700 block of Martin Road at around 4 p.m. on October 9 after reports of a shooting. About 4 p.m. Friday, deputies found Troy Hendrix, 30, suffering from a gunshot wound while responding to a shooting on the 700 block of Martin Road, the release said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Court documents reviewed by local reporters indicate that Hendrix was parked near the intersection, waiting for the school bus to drop off his children, when Johnson allegedly pulled up alongside his vehicle.

Investigators allege that Johnson opened his vehicle door and pointed a shotgun at Hendrix, and as Hendrix attempted to back away, Johnson followed his movements with the weapon before firing a single shot. Authorities say two witnesses saw the shooting, and the incident was also captured on a dash camera belonging to one of the witnesses. Johnson fled before deputies arrived, but was found a short distance away and arrested, the release said.

The man accused of killing Hendrix, identified by the sheriff's office as 72 year old Dickie Johnson, has been described in reporting as a neighbor. He was booked at the Saline County jail on charges that include capital murder, committing a terroristic act, driving while intoxicated, and endangering the welfare of a minor, and as of the Saturday after the shooting, he was being held at the Saline County jail with no bond set. Authorities have not released information regarding a possible motive for the shooting or whether Johnson and Hendrix knew each other before the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The killing of a father waiting for his children at a school bus stop, in front of witnesses and on camera, shocked the small Saline County community and drew wide attention from Arkansas news outlets, who framed the case as a question of how a routine moment at the end of a school day turned fatal. The case has also been noted for the age of the accused and for the unusually serious combination of charges he faces, which under Arkansas law can carry the possibility of capital punishment. As of this writing, no funeral or memorial details for Troy Hendrix have been made public, and many basic facts about his life, including his occupation, hometown of origin, and the names of his children, have not yet been reported.

I saw this on the local news Friday night and just sat there. A man waiting for his own children off the school bus. My nephew was taken the same way years back, a gunshot, and it never stops being this sudden. Praying for those babies who have to grow up now without their father waiting at that spot.

Court documents cited by local television stations say Hendrix was parked near the intersection, waiting for the school bus to drop off his children, when Johnson allegedly pulled up alongside his vehicle. Investigators allege Johnson opened his vehicle door and pointed a shotgun at Hendrix, and as Hendrix attempted to back away, Johnson followed his movements with the weapon before firing a single shot. Authorities say two witnesses saw the shooting, and the incident was also captured on a dash camera belonging to one of the witnesses.

Authorities have not released information regarding a possible motive for the shooting or whether Johnson and Hendrix knew each other before the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing, though Johnson has been described in some reports as a neighbor.

The case drew immediate and widespread attention in Arkansas and beyond because of where and how it happened, in front of a man's own children's school bus route and in view of witnesses. News of the shooting prompted shock in the Saline County community, though no public statements from family members, a funeral home, or a memorial service have yet been reported. This page will be updated as funeral and memorial details become public.
