Fourteen years old. I had the news on while my grandson was doing his homework and I just stopped and stared at the screen. Jeff and Jaclyn, I'm so sorry, I hope you find some peace.

Samantha Valentine Humphrey was fourteen years old, a freshman at Schenectady High School in New York, when she vanished on a late November night in 2022. Schenectady High School student Humphrey went missing on Nov. 25, 2022 at approximately 11:30 p.m. in the area of Riverside Park in the Stockade neighborhood. She was not a public figure before that night. She became one only because of the search for her, and later the fight for answers about what had happened to her.
Samantha was born in Metairie, Louisiana. She was survived by a multitude of loving and devastated family and friends who would remember her with joy and pain, among them her mother, Jaclyn Humphrey, her father, Jeff Humphrey, and her paternal grandparents, Dianne and John Matarazzo. In the days after she disappeared, her mother spoke publicly to ask for the community's help, and Jaclyn Humphrey said she was very grateful for the resources that police were using to try to find her daughter.
After an exhaustive search of the Mohawk River, her body was recovered in the river in the same park area on Feb. 22, 2023, three months after she was last seen. Investigators initially listed the cause of death as undetermined, but the medical examiner had noted it was probably a homicide, and after further investigation was satisfied that suicide was not an option, so he ruled the manner of death was homicide caused by asphyxiation.
No arrest followed for more than two years. In that time, her family sought justice for her death, renting billboards offering a reward for information and starting a lawn sign campaign asking anyone with information to contact police, including billboards emblazoned with Samantha's photo and the caption "Who Murdered Me?". In May 2025, Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney announced that a special grand jury had indicted Samantha's former boyfriend, Raymond Wright Jr., then 17, on a charge of second degree murder. At a news conference, Carney said investigators believed Samantha thought she was pregnant and the sometime boyfriend was the father, that he wanted nothing to do with the baby and insisted she get rid of it. Wright pleaded not guilty and was held pending trial.
Nearly four years after Samantha Humphrey went missing in Riverside Park, jury selection in the case against Raymond Wright Jr. was set to begin on Oct. 19 at 9:30 a.m. in Schenectady County Court, with the trial itself expected to last about three weeks. Her father has said he is confident in the prosecution's case, while reminding relatives that whatever the verdict, it cannot undo the loss of his daughter.
Samantha was remembered in her family's obituary as someone with talents, loves and dreams, and her ashes were spread on the bright ocean beaches she had loved and missed. A brief memorial service was held for her on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Daly Funeral Home in Schenectady. She is survived by her parents, grandparents and extended family, who have spent four years seeking answers about what happened to her.
