I only caught this on my phone here in Manila, half a world off, and it still stopped me cold. A woman of thirty five, expecting a child, gone in a fire on some lane I will never see. Thinking of her mother and sisters tonight.

Samantha Natalie Phythian, known to family and friends as Sammi, was a 35 year old woman from Rhyl, in Denbighshire, North Wales. She did not hold public office or a public career; she became known nationally only in the days after her death, when North Wales Police launched a murder investigation into how she died. Before that, she was known in her own community as a mother, daughter, sister and aunt, remembered by her family as someone who will be remembered for the special place she held in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.
Phythian died following a van fire on Gas Works Lane, Prestatyn, on the evening of Sunday 4 October. Emergency services were called to the scene after reports that a van was on fire on Gas Works Lane. Her body was found inside the vehicle, and a postmortem examination revealed she was pregnant when she died. Police have indicated that Phythian may have been alive when the fire was started, meaning she died as a result of the blaze rather than before it.
Her death matters to the public first because of the shock and cruelty of the circumstances, and second because it quickly became a criminal case. The inquiry led to the arrest of Thomas Matthew Hammond Bell, who was later charged with murder. He has appeared in court, where it was stated that the full sequence of events leading to the fire, including how it started and the circumstances in which Phythian died, remains subject to the legal process. As of this writing, the inquest into Ms Phythian's death opened at County Hall in Ruthin, and the case continues to move through the courts.
In the days after her death, Phythian's family paid tribute to her publicly. They said her tragic and untimely death has left her family and friends devastated, struggling to come to terms with the loss of someone who meant so much to so many. A fundraiser was launched for her, with the family writing that we are heartbroken to be writing these words following the tragic loss of our beautiful Samantha Natalie Phythian known to those closest to her as Sammi, whose life was taken in the most horrific way possible. The family have also asked for their privacy to be respected, expressing their distress at the level of speculation and discussion surrounding Sammi's death on social media.
Because Phythian was a private individual before her death, little has been published about her earlier life, education or career, and this page will be updated as more verified information becomes available. What is firmly established by police and multiple news reports is the date, location and nature of her death, the fact that she was pregnant, and that a man has been charged with her murder. Many details, including a full account of what happened on the night of 4 October and the eventual outcome of the prosecution, remain unresolved and will be added once reported by reputable sources.
