Sankaramanchi Janaki (nee Tekumalla Janaki), known to generations of filmgoers as Sowcar Janaki, was one of the most durable and versatile actors in South Indian cinema. In their own words

Life is uncertain. You have to exit when the curtain is down. Be prepared and go peacefully; that's my only wish.

The Hindu interview, 2021

I might have received numerous awards in the 73 years of my career, but this tops everything because it is a national honour.

What a life. From Rajahmundry to the world, four languages, and that Padma Shri at 90. She said awards should come to you, not the other way round, and she lived it. Her way of working is gone now but the films stay. Rest well.

Nearly 400 films. That's not a career, that's a calling. The industry lost a pillar today.

Balachander wouldn't have been Balachander without her. She made the frame look like life.

Early life and family

Tekumalla Janaki was born on 12 December 1931 in Rajahmundry, East Godavari district, Madras Presidency (now Andhra Pradesh), to Tekumalla Venkoji Rao and Sachi Devi, a Kannada-speaking Madhva Brahmin family. Her younger sister Krishna Kumari later became a film actress. Janaki was associated with All India Radio Madras as an A-grade artiste. An early film offer from B. N. Reddy was declined by her family. She married Sankaramanchi Srinivasa Rao in 1947 and continued her education after marriage.

Education

She completed early and continuing studies after marriage, sitting matriculation examinations while pregnant and graduating in connection with Gauhati University, Assam. Award biographies list an honorary doctorate citation connected with Arizona / World University Arizona. Formal film-school training is not documented; her craft was shaped by radio, theatre and on-set work.

Career and discovery

Discovery via All India Radio Madras and L. V. Prasad's Telugu debut Shavukaru (1950), which also introduced N. T. Rama Rao and gave Janaki the lifelong Sowcar prefix. Tamil debut: Valayapathi (1952). Leading heroine across Telugu, Tamil and Kannada in the 1950s-60s, then defining character and mother roles for K. Balachander and subsequent generations. Produced Kaviya Thalaivi (1970). Nearly 400…

Personal life

Married Sankaramanchi Srinivasa Rao in 1947; three children (Yagna Prabha Koty, Venkataramana Sankaramanchi, Sachi Rao). Four grandchildren named in industry statements including actress Vaishnavi Aravind; also four great-grandchildren. Husband predeceased her. Long association with Chennai. Twin off-screen interests reported: food and interior design.

Beliefs and views

Public interviews present a pragmatic, unsentimental work ethic and a preference for awards that arrive without lobbying. On receiving the Padma Shri she said a national honour topped other career awards. On death, she told The Hindu in 2021 that life is uncertain and that her wish was to be prepared and go peacefully when the curtain fell. Colleagues described…

Legacy and impact

Her legacy is the rare combination of longevity, language range and reinvention: heroine of the studio era, Balachander-era modernist, comic and maternal character actor into the 21st century. The Sowcar name became a brand of reliability. Padma Shri (2022) capped state and industry lifetime awards. Kamal Haasan's tribute fixed the public emotional register of amma and indispensable craft.

Awards and honours

Kalaimamani; Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress for Iru Kodugal (1970); Tamil Nadu State Film Honorary Award - MGR Award (1990); Nandi Awards for Best Supporting Actress; Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award - South (1984); SIIMA Lifetime Achievement Award (2013); Karnataka Rajyotsava Award (2015); Padma Shri (2022; investiture 28 March 2022).

Controversies

No major public legal scandals dominate her obituaries. Secondary reporting has repeated her comments that substantial earnings were lost through her husband's financial dealings; treat as reported interview recollection. Some Tamil lifestyle pieces claim a 1961 divorce; Wikipedia lists the 1947 marriage without a divorce date, so divorce is not asserted as settled. Overall public memory emphasises craft and longevity.

Death

Admitted to Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, Chennai, on or about 19 August 2026 for age-related illness and intensive care. Died 21 August 2026 at approximately 1:59 p.m. IST, aged 94. Cause described as age-related illness / age-related health issues (specific pathology not made public). Confirmed by Nadigar Sangam president Nassar. Last rites 22 August 2026 at Besant Nagar Electric Crematorium, Chennai; state honours reported. Survived by three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
