Sway DaSafo

Sway DaSafo died at his home in Ghana on 17 September 2026, aged 44, days after posting about turning 44. No cause of death was made public. The MOBO Awards confirmed the news and recalled his place in the awards' history. KSI posted that Sway had believed in him when many did not, called him a father figure, and sent love to his children and family. Lemar, Adam Deacon, Top Boy colleague Kadeem Ramsay and others shared tributes. Coverage in the Guardian, BBC News, the Evening Standard, Metro, the Independent, Official Charts and the Los Angeles Times documented the reaction across UK music and entertainment.

Derek Andrew Safo was born on 5 September 1982 and grew up in Hornsey, North London, the son of Ghanaian parents Beatrice and Alhaji. He attended Campsbourne Junior School and Highgate Wood Secondary School, where he spent time learning music production. North London's emerging grime and UK hip hop scenes of the late 1990s and early 2000s were the backdrop to his teens. He later spoke of Ghanaian heritage as a lasting part of his identity, including periods spent connected to family and creative life in Ghana.

At Highgate Wood Secondary School in North London, Safo focused on music production alongside his studies. Formal higher-education credentials were not the centre of his public biography; instead he treated studios, mixtape circuits and live stages as his training ground. Early production work with collaborators at Dcypha became the practical school that prepared him for independent releases and major-label collaborations.

Sway co-founded Dcypha Productions and issued This Is My Promo volumes 1 and 2 in 2004. In 2005 he became the first unsigned rapper to win Best Hip Hop Act at the MOBO Awards. Debut album This Is My Demo (2006) brought a Mercury Prize nomination, the UK top-40 single Little Derek, strong independent sales, and a BET Hip Hop Award for Best UK Act. He signed to Akon's Konvict Music in 2008 and released The Signature LP, including F UR X and Silver and Gold featuring Akon. After health setbacks he scored Still Speedin' (UK No. 19, 2011) and Level Up with Flux Pavilion (UK No. 8, 2012) on 3Beat. He featured on Lupe Fiasco's Lasers, worked with Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson and Ghanaian stars, signed Tiggs Da Author and KSI to Dcypha, released the Wake Up EP (2013) and Deliverance (2015), briefly partnered with Island Records, then built New Reign Productions and issued Verses from the Vault projects and Songs from the Stash. He also acted, notably as Ross Rosten in Top Boy.

Sway kept much of his private life out of tabloid detail while speaking openly about fatherhood. Public reports and his own posts describe him as a proud single father to two sons and two daughters; Wikipedia and contemporary coverage note the 2017 birth of his son Ammar-Joseph as an inspiration for later album projects dedicated to his children. Friends paying tribute after his death, including Kreams, spoke of FaceTime conversations with the children and of mutual support between fathers. He maintained strong ties to Ghana, where he was reported to have died at home in September 2026.

Independence was a through-line in Sway's public stance: winning a MOBO before a debut album, releasing This Is My Demo without major-label machinery, and later calling Deliverance a project meant to be discovered rather than marketed by singles. After Hodgkin lymphoma in 2010 he wrote about faith, determination and privacy in illness, telling Lymphoma Action he did not want to bring attention to the disease while fighting it, and later urging listeners that whatever happens, we must keep swimming. Faith language appeared again in 2026 recovery posts thanking God and supporters. As a mentor he emphasised belief in artists others dismissed, a theme KSI later returned to in tribute.

Sway's 2005 MOBO win is routinely cited as a landmark for unsigned UK talent. This Is My Demo's Mercury nomination helped argue that British hip hop belonged in the same conversation as other critically serious albums. Chart breakthroughs with Still Speedin' and Level Up showed he could move from underground esteem to mainstream radio without abandoning lyricism. His work discovering and developing KSI and Tiggs Da Author extended his influence into the 2010s streaming era. After his death the MOBO Awards, peers and a generation of listeners remembered him as a pioneer who proved UK rappers did not need American co-signs to matter.

Major recognitions included the 2005 MOBO Award for Best Hip Hop Act (first unsigned winner), Urban Music Awards for Best Rap, Ghana Music Awards and Blackstars Awards for Best UK Act, a Screen Nation Award for Best Music Act, Official Mixtape Awards recognition, and a BET Hip Hop Award for Best UK Hip Hop Act. This Is My Demo was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. He received further MOBO and BET nominations later in his career.

Beyond records, Sway appeared as Ross Rosten in the first series of Channel 4's Top Boy (2011), and in films including Illegal Activity (2012), The Grind (2012) and a cameo in The Chase (2013). His tracks circulated widely on early YouTube and in other artists' videos; KSI later recalled using Sway's music in old uploads before they worked together. Collaborations with Akon, Lupe Fiasco, Ed Sheeran, Lemar, Madness (on a Sorry remix) and others placed him across UK garage, hip hop, pop and African music networks.

In 2010 Sway was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, kept the diagnosis largely private at the time, and went into remission later that year. In a 2016 piece for Lymphoma Action he described the shock of diagnosis and the determination to overcome it, and said the experience inspired The Sea on Deliverance. He also wrote that part of him always looked over his shoulder afterward. In June 2026 he posted that he was recovering step by step from an unspecified health issue, thanking those helping him, without publicly linking it to his earlier cancer.
