Read about her son's tribute today. "Nothing could ever repay all that you have done." That line stayed with me all afternoon.

Yang Mulia Tengku Puteri Zainah binti Tengku Eskandar, widely known as Tengku Puteri Zainah, was a member of the Kelantan royal family and the first wife of Malaysia's sixth prime minister, Najib Razak. Malay-language Wikipedia and contemporary memorial notices give her birth year as 1956. A more precise birth date and birthplace have not been made public. She was also known in family circles as Ku Ri, and official biographical notes on Najib have used the spelling Kui Yie.
In 1976 she married Najib, then a newly emerging politician whose father, Abdul Razak Hussein, had been Malaysia's second prime minister. That same year Najib entered Parliament for the Pahang seat of Pekan after his father's death. They had three children: Mohamad Nizar Najib, born 11 May 1978; Mohd Nazifuddin Najib; and Puteri Norlisa Najib, also spelled Putri Norlisa in later reports. During the marriage Najib served as a deputy minister and, from 1982 to 1986, as Menteri Besar of Pahang.
The couple divorced in 1987 after more than ten years of marriage. Najib later married Rosmah Mansor. Tengku Puteri Zainah remained the mother of his three eldest children and kept a much lower public profile than Malaysia's later political first ladies. In June 2004, The Star reported that the Kelantan princess Tengku Puteri Zainah Tengku Eskandar Sharifudin hosted a reception at the JW Marriott Grand Ballroom for her eldest son Nizar's wedding.
Her children later became public figures in their own right. Nizar, a chartered accountant who worked at Accenture and Deloitte, entered politics with the United Malays National Organisation. In 2022 he won the Pahang state seat of Peramu Jaya, and he has served since December 2022 as a member of the Pahang State Executive Council with the investment, industry, science, technology and innovation portfolio. Nazifuddin has also been active in UMNO. Family tributes remembered Tengku Puteri Zainah less as a political actor than as a mother whose love, sacrifices and prayers shaped her children's lives.
She did not maintain a widely documented public career of her own. Details of her education, private work and everyday residences have not been made public. Her royal style, Yang Mulia Tengku Puteri, and contemporary descriptions of her as a Kelantan princess, place her within a Malay royal family rather than in elected office.
On 4 November 2026, Nizar asked relatives, friends and the public to pray for his mother, saying she was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Gleneagles Hospital Ampang, in the Kuala Lumpur area. Malaysian news organizations carried the appeal the same day. On 5 November 2026 he announced her death on Facebook. She was 70, according to Malay Mail, The Star, The Straits Times and Malaysiakini, a figure consistent with the 1956 birth year recorded on Malay Wikipedia and on memorial notices. A few outlets initially reported her age as 65. The cause of death was not made public.
Nizar thanked her for all her love, sacrifices and prayers throughout her life and asked that God forgive her sins and place her among the inhabitants of Jannatul Firdaus. A statement shared on Najib's official Facebook account, reported by the New Straits Times, described her as an important part of his life and the mother of their children. It said he was unable to be with the family at that difficult time, but that his thoughts and prayers were with the children and her family.
The following day, 6 November 2026, Nizar said the burial had been completed and thanked everyone who had come to pay their last respects and offer prayers. Writing from Pekan, he asked God to forgive his mother, have mercy on her soul and place her among the people of Paradise, and added that her child's prayers would always accompany her. The exact cemetery was not named in published reports.
Tengku Puteri Zainah should not be confused with Rosmah Mansor, Najib's second wife, or with other royal women of similar names. She is remembered as a princess, as the first wife of a Malaysian prime minister, and above all as the mother Nizar said would live on in her children's prayers and memories.
