My grandma had Neighbours on every afternoon when I stayed with her after school, Doug Willis yelling about something and her laughing at the TV. Didn't know his name until today. 90 years old, that's a whole life well lived.

Terence Patrick Donovan was a British-born Australian actor whose career on stage and screen stretched across six decades, from a 1960 production of West Side Story to a cameo in the 2022 finale of Neighbours. To Australian audiences he was the steady detective of Division 4 and Cop Shop, the timber cutter and the station hand of classic Australian films, and later Doug Willis, the plumber and patriarch of Ramsay Street. To many viewers in Britain he was also known as the father of the singer and actor Jason Donovan.
Donovan was born in London on 28 October 1935. When he was 14 he moved to Australia with his parents, joining his older brother George, who had gone ahead in search of a new life. Before acting took hold he worked as a truck driver and a house painter. His son Jason later recalled that one of his first Australian television appearances was on Channel 7's Live Variety Show in September 1960, when he was 25, singing I've Got You Under My Skin.
His first professional acting job was in the Garnet H. Carroll production of West Side Story in 1960, followed by The Most Happy Fella and The Sound of Music. He joined Wal Cherry's Emerald Hill Theatre Company and took minor roles in the courtroom series Consider Your Verdict and in ABC television plays. Frustrated by the lack of work in Australia, he returned to London in 1963 and found steady television work with Rediffusion and Granada, appearing in Danger Man, Man in a Suitcase, The Champions and The Prisoner. He spent a season with the Oxford Playhouse and had a small part as a policeman in the 1968 film Oliver!
Donovan married the actress and television presenter Sue McIntosh in 1965. When she became pregnant she returned to Melbourne so their child could be born there, and Donovan took a job as an entertainment officer on a ship to join her. Their son Jason was born in 1968. Back in Australia, Donovan worked in Oh, What a Lovely War! and Thomas Keneally's play Halloran's Little Boat before Crawford Productions cast him as Senior Detective Mick Peters in Division 4, which he played from 1969 to 1975.
He was also an outspoken campaigner for Australian stories on Australian screens. In 1970 he was among the actors from Homicide and Division 4 who marched through central Melbourne demanding local content quotas, and he addressed crowds on behalf of the Make It Australian committee. Jason Donovan later wrote that the campaign led to an obligation on commercial broadcasters to screen Australian drama, and that without people like his father there might have been no Neighbours or Home and Away.
The late 1970s brought some of his best known work. He played Frank Lammence in the miniseries Power Without Glory (1976), took the title role in the first performance of Kenneth G. Ross's play Breaker Morant for the Melbourne Theatre Company in 1978, and led the crime film Money Movers. In the 1980 film Breaker Morant he played Captain Hunt. From 1979 to 1981 he starred as Detective Senior Sergeant Vic Cameron in Cop Shop, then chose to leave without other work lined up. He was soon cast as Henry Craig in The Man from Snowy River (1982), and he played the lawyer Billy Flynn in the Sydney Theatre Company's Chicago.
His marriage to Sue McIntosh ended in 1972 and he raised Jason largely as a single father. In November 1981 he married Marlene Saunders, and their son Paul was born in 1982. Through the 1980s he appeared in Prisoner, Sons and Daughters, A Country Practice, The Flying Doctors, E Street and Mission: Impossible, and played Prime Minister John Curtin in the film Death of a Soldier.
In 1990 he had a guest run on Home and Away as Al Simpson, then joined Neighbours as Doug Willis, not long after Jason had left the show. He played Doug until 1994 and returned for the 20th anniversary in 2005, for episodes in 2014 to 2016 that ended with the character's death, and for a cameo alongside Jason in the 2022 finale. His stage work continued with Captain Hook in a UK tour of Peter Pan, Follies at the Sydney Opera House, Annie Get Your Gun, Sunset Boulevard and Travelling North.
Terence Donovan died peacefully in Melbourne on 18 July 2026, aged 90, with his family by his side. His sons Jason and Paul announced his death the next day, calling him a huge character, larger than life, and their best friend. Jason thanked the staff of Cabrini Hospital in Melbourne for their care in his final days. A cause of death was not made public.

“The facts cannot be ignored that almost all our newspapers, radios and television are controlled by about four men, who I believe have selfishly exploited their privileged position and avoided their responsibility to the Australian community, especially to children, and to the Australians employed in the entertainment community.”
