Tony Newhall was a Santa Clarita Valley newspaper publisher and civic volunteer whose family name is written into the map of the town of Newhall itself. He died on 25 September 2026 in Valencia, California, at the age of 85, after a long illness.

Born Anthony Newhall on 18 March 1941 in Palo Alto to Scott and Ruth Newhall, he grew up in Berkeley with his twin brother Jonathan. He graduated from Stanford University in 1964 with a degree in economics. After hearing Sargent Shriver recruit for the newly founded Peace Corps, he trained in Spanish at Cal State Los Angeles and spent 1964 to 1966 in Peru helping build cooperative credit unions. Brief stints followed at a family import-export firm, on a San Francisco mayoral campaign, and in Caribbean trading before he moved to the Santa Clarita Valley in 1968 to join the family's weekly paper, The Signal.

At The Signal he worked beside his father Scott, the former San Francisco Chronicle editor, and his twin Jonathan, who became the paper's editor. Newhall rose from circulation manager to general manager and was named publisher in 1977, serving until 1988. He was elected president of the California Newspaper Publishers Association in 1986. From 1989 he spent a decade in San Francisco as associate publisher of the Chronicle, then returned to the valley in 1999.

Parallel to journalism he built a lasting volunteer record. He joined the Newhall Boys' Club board soon after arriving in 1968, founded the Boys Club Auction in 1972, and chaired its live auction for about a decade. The auction became the club's biggest fundraiser, and the Tony Newhall Volunteer of the Year Award later carried his name. He also served on boards of the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Foundation, United Way campaigns, the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, and Friends of Hart Park. In 1985 he was named Santa Clarita Valley Man of the Year.

In 1975 he took dance classes at Reena's Dance Studio in Saugus and married Reena on 13 February 1982. They taught ballroom and disco locally and dance lessons on Delta Cruise Lines sailings. He is survived by Reena, four children, and seven grandchildren. Local outlets including SCVNews, The Signal, and Hometown Station remembered a humble organizer who preferred behind-the-scenes work to credit.

Just read the piece about him building credit unions in Peru back in '64. Never knew that town name had this whole story behind it. Didn't expect to feel this struck by a stranger's obituary.

Newhall's legacy runs through both print and philanthropy in the Santa Clarita Valley. As Signal publisher and later California Newspaper Publishers Association president he linked a family paper to statewide press leadership. As founder of the Boys Club Auction and namesake of the Tony Newhall Volunteer of the Year Award he left a fundraising tradition that former Boys & Girls Club CEO Jim Ventress called the club's biggest annual event. Colleagues remembered an "old soul" who sought ways to help without wanting credit. The valley that bears his family's name remembers him as 1985 Man of the Year and a steady board member across hospital, historical, and park causes.
